In the UK, the South Wales and the Metropolitan Police Service often use live facial recognition technology at large events.
In the United States, at least five large police departments — including those in Chicago, Dallas and Los Angeles — have claimed to have run real-time facial recognition programs.
The privacy group Liberty brought a lawsuit to the High Court in the UK, seeking an outright ban on the use of the technology in the UK, but the High Courts have ruled “that police use of the systems is acceptable and does not violate privacy and human rights”
