Geta Brătescu : Atelierul The Studio / Editată de Edited by Alina Şerban ; Texte de Texts by: Anca Arghir, Geta Brătescu, 3013, Adrian Guța, Magda Radu, Magdalena Ziółkowska

"The book is dedicated to Romanian artist Geta Brătescu, one of the most remarkable personalities of the Eastern European postwar avant-garde. The main part of the publication comprises visual materials and texts written by the artist that span several decades of her activity, outlining the exceptional manner in which she has appropriated the lesson of modernism and interrelated it with conceptual challenges. Brătescu focuses on the artistic process, advancing a multidisciplinary approach by using various media: film, happening, tapestry, engraving, collage, objects, and text. The book comes as a result of long-term research conducted in the artist’s archive. It contains theoretical contributions that track the multilayered dialectics of Brătescu’s work: from the remarkable conceptualization of the act of drawing to the crucial role advocated by the studio, from the preoccupation with self-representation and seriality to the subtle diffusion of theatricality in her work."

I know why the caged bird sings / Maya Angelou

"Maya Angelou's seven volumes of autobiography are a testament to the talents and resilience of this extraordinary writer. Loving the world, she also knows its cruelty. As a Black woman she has known discrimination and extreme poverty, but also hope, joy, achievement and celebration. In this first volume of her six books of autobiography, Maya Angelou beautifully evokes her childhood with her grandmother in the American south of the 1930s. She learns the power of the white folks at the other end of town and suffers the terrible trauma of r**e by her mother's lover. 'I write about being a Black American woman, however, I am always talking about what it's like to be a human being. This is how we are, what makes us laugh, and this is how we fall and how we somehow, amazingly, stand up again' (Maya Angelou)"

The secret lives of colour / Kassia St Clair

"The Secret Lives of Colour tells the unusual stories of the 75 most fascinating shades, dyes and hues. From blonde to ginger, the brown that changed the way battles were fought to the white that protected against the plague, Picasso's blue period to the charcoal on the cave walls at Lascaux, acid yellow to kelly green, and from scarlet women to imperial purple, these surprising stories run like a bright thread throughout history. In this book Kassia St Clair has turned her lifelong obsession with colours and where they come from (whether Van Gogh's chrome yellow sunflowers or punk's fluorescent pink) into a unique study of human civilisation. Across fashion and politics, art and war, The Secret Lives of Colour tell the vivid story of our culture."

The naked gaze : reflections on Chinese modernity / Carlos Rojas

"This is a study of visuality in early modern and modern China. Its focus, however, is not so much on imagery per se but rather on how vision itself has been conceived, imagined, and deployed in a variety of discursive contexts. Of particular interest is how these discourses of vision have been used to articulate issues of gender and desire, and specifically processes of gendered subject formation. Through detailed readings of narrative works by eight nineteenth and twentieth century authorsranging from the canonical to the popular to the esotericthe study identifies three distinct constellations of visual concerns corresponding to the late imperial, mid-twentieth century, and contemporary periods, respectively. At the same time, however, it argues that those historical periodizations themselves do not reflect a smooth, unidirectional temporal movement; rather, they are the result of a complex process of retrospection and anticipatory projection. The goal of this volume is to use a focus on tropes of visuality and gender to reflect on shifting understandings of the significance of Chineseness, modernity, and Chinese modernity."

Across boundaries : the journey of a South African woman leader / A memoir by Mamphela Ramphele ; foreword by Johnnetta B. Cole ; historical and political background by Carla Sutherland

"''Survival,'' writes Mamphela Ramphele, ''is a stronger force than the fear of offending others.'' In Across Boundaries, Ramphele, one of the most distinguished women of the African continent, recounts her personal journey from schoolgirl in rural, apartheid-era South Africa, to medical doctor and founder of community health clinics, to leading activist in the struggle against apartheid, to university president and mother of two sons. In addition to the fascinating and often gripping events of her life, she describes the personal side of her experiencesher early struggles to maintain dignity and hope in a world that devalued both black people and women; her battles against despair, especially after the murder of her colleague and lover Steven Biko; and the death of their first child, a daughter, in infancy. Across Boundaries chronicles Ramphele's inspiring journey and reveals the staggering personal losses that coexisted with her astonishing political and professional achievements."

Parallel encyclopedia / Batia Suter

"Batia Suter’s work intuitively situates found images in new contexts to provoke surprising reactions and significative possibilities. This volume follows on from the first ‘Parallel Encyclopedia’, published in 2007. Underlying themes of Suter’s practice are the “iconification” and “immunogenicity” of old images, and the circumstances by which they become charged with new associative values. “In my work, I collect groups of images based on various themes and characteristics, and I investigate how they can manipulate each other, depending on where and how they are placed. In the process of making this book, narrative lines unfolded before my eyes as I shifted images around.”
