Het belangrijkste gewas ter wereld is afkomstig uit het Andesgebied van Zuid-Amerika. De wereldwijde totale gewasproductie bedraagt ​​meer dan 300 miljoen ton en het gaat om meer dan 4000 verschillende aardappelrassen in vele soorten en maten.

Aardappelen kunnen in veel verschillende klimatologische omgevingen groeien, tot wel 4.700 meter boven zeeniveau. Een hectare aardappelen kan een opbrengst opleveren met een voedselwaarde van meer dan vier hectare graan. Dit alles maakt de aardappel tot het op twee na belangrijkste voedselgewas ter wereld. 🌍

Maar dat betekent niet dat de aardappelteelt eenvoudig is. De aardappelproductie wordt beperkt door een aantal factoren, zoals ziekten, opslagproblemen en knollen van onvoldoende kwaliteit om te planten enz.

Als we denken aan de aardappelproductie zijn er veel dingen aan de hand, zoals specifieke zaken op het gebied van planten, telen, voeding en irrigatiebeheer. Maar de zaken die telers het meest zorgen baren zijn:

Sharing the latest news on the project "Automatic aphid detection in potato fields"!

Work package 2 is all about trap optimization and not even the winter season stops us!

The adaptation of two iSCOUT prototypes has been started and the goal is to monitor and identify Aphididae visually. The devices have been shipped to the Netherlands and installed by our partner WUR on fields and in the laboratory.

Remote access and control of the devices, sending two pictures daily works fine. A third prototype, using a different lens has been produced too and is tested now in- house.

We take the opportunity to thank our partner Vantage Agrometius, who connected us with our project partners Wageningen University & Research, Meteoblue AG, Nederlandse Algemene Keuringsdienst and farmofthefuture) to work on such an interesting and challenging topic.

Timely ⏰pest control is vital to keeping your plants and fields alive and healthy.
With better understanding of insect development and adverse effects the unnecessary use of pesticides has on the environment and human health, 𝙄𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙋𝙚𝙨𝙩 𝙈𝙖𝙣𝙖𝙜𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 (IPM) was developed.
When it comes to the development of our iSCOUT insect monitoring and insect control solutions, the IPM rules have been one of the key points to follow.
The goal was to empower the farmer to make informed decisions, and make them without losing unnecessary time. We've created a remote insect monitoring solution - an automatic insect trap with a camera system and a sticky plate, to help you remotely monitor insect pressure in fields. It employs the 🔁𝟱 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗣 𝗶𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗜𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗣 🔁
1. 𝗶𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: iSCOUT insect trap catches pest insects in the field
2. 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗽: Camera takes high-resolution pictures of the sticky plate
3. 𝗙𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀: Pictures are analyzed & the results are seen in FieldClimate platform
4. 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮: Based on the results (population level of the pest insect), the farmer decides about plant protection activities
5. 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗦𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗧: Farmer goes into the field (at the same time when they do plant protection measurement) and cleans the iSCOUT (change the glueboard and lure/pheromone).
All this promotes the growth of healthy crops 🌱with the minimum needed disruption of the environment and encourages mindful pest 🐛control and it all starts with sharing knowledge and spreading awareness.
