Yes, your crane control system is very likely the reason for increasing downtime. When control systems age, lose calibration accuracy or develop communication faults, they trigger unnecessary shutdowns, generate false alarms and prevent operators from responding to real operational conditions with confidence.
The result is unplanned stoppages that compound over time and erode productivity. The sections below work through the most common questions surrounding crane downtime and control system failure, so you can identify where the problem starts and what to do about it: https://www.pat-kruger.com/crane-downtime-increasing-your-control-system-might-be-the-reason/

A warm Dutch welcome at ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference. The PAT-Krüger team stopped by the Dutch Pavilion, where Jeroen de Graaf from Maritime & Offshore NL welcomed us with stroopwafels. A taste of home on the exhibition floor in Abu Dhabi. Thanks for the hospitality, Jeroen!

When a crane system is obsolete, you have three options: repair the existing components, retrofit the system with modern technology or replace the entire crane. The right choice depends on the age and condition of the system, the availability of spare parts, current safety and compliance requirements and the operational demands placed on the equipment. This article works through the key questions operators and engineers face when evaluating aging crane systems: https://www.pat-kruger.com/obsolete-crane-systems-repair-replace-or-retrofit/

Some loads are scarier than others. 🎃 But whatever hangs from the hook, safety and control remain serious business.

Happy Halloween from PAT-Krüger!

Replacing a safety or control system requires an assessment of the complete installation. The controller is connected to sensors, encoders, operator controls, displays, machine signals and existing wiring. Safety functions and application-specific settings must also be considered.

PAT-Krüger handles this work as a system integration project. We first assess how the machine operates and how the existing components work together. This provides the basis for deciding which components can be reused and which need to be replaced.

A typical DSx30 installation can include a PLC, display, force sensors, encoders, and angle and length sensors. Depending on the installation, existing joysticks and pedals can be retained, or new controls can be supplied.

The engineering work covers the integration of retained and replacement components into one safety and control system. The replacement scope follows the machine requirements and the assessment of the existing installation.

𝗗𝗦𝟭𝟮𝟬 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗦𝟭𝟯𝟬 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗭𝗣𝗠𝗖 𝗦𝗧𝗦 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲𝘀 - We have just replaced two DS120 systems with DS130 systems on two ZPMC ship-to-shore cranes in Libreville, Gabon.

Replacing legacy electronics requires careful integration with the crane’s existing installation. Signal interfaces, system configuration and crane-specific parameters are key considerations, followed by calibration and functional testing to verify correct operation.

This type of retrofit allows the monitoring electronics to be modernised while keeping the existing crane in service. It also provides a current platform for future maintenance and technical support.

Running an end-of-life crane control system puts operators at serious, measurable risk. When a system reaches end-of-life, it means the manufacturer no longer provides software updates, spare parts or technical support, leaving the crane operating on hardware and logic that was never designed to handle current workloads, regulations or failure modes.

The sections below unpack the specific risks, compliance consequences, cost implications and practical steps involved in moving away from an obsolete system: https://www.pat-kruger.com/still-running-an-end-of-life-crane-system-heres-what-you-risk/

Heavy machinery can remain mechanically serviceable after its original electronics become obsolete. HMI’s, safety and control components may become difficult to repair or replace, while the machine structure is still suitable for continued use.

PAT-Krüger can use the DSx30 safety and control platform to develop a replacement system for an existing machine. The configuration depends on the application and may include programmable logic controllers (PLCs), displays, force sensors, encoders, and boom angle and length sensors. Existing operator controls can also be included where suitable.

The first step is to assess the installed system and identify which components can be retained. We then define the hardware and software changes needed to integrate the replacement components with the machine.

This approach can extend the working life of the machine by replacing obsolete safety and control equipment with a system that can be maintained and supported.

𝗞𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸. A customer recently visited PAT-Krüger with an electric rail crane, giving our technical team the opportunity to check the RCI system we supplied.

Regular service checks help detect faults or deviations early, supporting reliable load monitoring and helping reduce the risk of unexpected downtime. For operators, a well-maintained RCI system provides confidence when working within the crane’s permitted load limits.

These visits also allow us to discuss operating conditions and maintenance questions directly with the customer, providing practical support for day-to-day operation.

Great to see this impressive piece of equipment up close. Thank you for visiting!
