One of the activities is done in co-operation with Altos Advisors, where the MD of Shades of Blue acts as country manager Benelux. The main activity of Altos Advisors is business development for companies that enter the European telecom market. At the section TEAM the other co-operations are mentioned. In this way of working we are able to cover all aspects of development with a single point of contact. In a project additional resources can be made available to pinpoint specific issues, all without hugh extensions of project teams. The approach is lean and keeps lean, following Ockham’s razor: “entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity" (entia non sunt multiplicanda praeter necessitatem). Or to put it in normal language: less is more and keep it simple. The main line of industry is MEDIA (print and broadcast) and TELECOM, with a focus on mass market. But we are flexible to adapt to any situation, currently a side step to the ENERGY industry is made. There are quite some similarities with the telecom industry, both in product differentiation and level of maturity (both are recent sectors in open competition).

Scrum Master training at

With a lot of experience in my backpack I decided to do the PSM1 training at Scrumit provided by Wessel Hofman.
It was a lot of fun using rugby as the paradigm to understand the scrum values.
Besides being prepared for the upcoming assessment to get a certificate I experienced several learnings:
• Get back to the basics, throw away most of the additions you made over the years.
• It is possible to build a team in 8 hours, I participated in an open training with seven other people, complete strangers at the start.

Digital Transformation and Agile.
Two topics that are hyping quite a bit in the past two years. I am still wondering why and how we were so far ahead, already since the eraly nineties.

Agility was a way to survive in the arena we were operating. At Rotaform serving multiple customers (amongst them the Nationale Postcodeloterij) by delivering dataservices and direct mail campaigns. High levels of end to end automation to avoid dodgy manual processes. Data processing as well as payment reconciliation.
At Het Fiancieele Dagblad I experienced publishing a newspaper was a daily releaseprocess. So we hade to tool up to manage. And the online publication required a lot of inventions, as the technology was not mature yet.
Zon and Versatel needed fast product lifecycles, as the market was highly competitive. New technologies put us in the frontline. As first mover or as follower, competing on quality and price. ADSL and IPTV as two highlights.
Competing on price was only possible by providing a high level of selfcare and automated provisioning. Besides a lean operations and development team.

After these project it was wondering about the next projects where the levels were pretty low, or even non-existent. Coaching on the business process automation and using of agile delivery processes. But always combined with actual deliveries, not a pure coaching role, but more as a playing captain.

AGILE, a new hype.
I hardly can count the number of projects and programs I've been in that do it agile-ish. So far the only ones zere when it did not have a name yet.
In my current assignment I have the challenge to move to SAFe. A challenge as it is in a vortex, the thing that happens if you act waterfall in an agile environment.
Good thing is the ceremonies are known, it is just getting the things done right: storywriting and story mapping. Setting the right priorities (which differs from everything), Getting environments used properly. Have the demo as a final acceptance, instead of going to the business afterwards. Killing dependencies, at least ensure they are not halting any progress.
Transparency an easy word, but you have to set the scene to make it happen and get the progress under control.
