News from the STARTUP world 🌏

These 6 Dutch impact startups are raising for a 1 million euros award in the Postcode Lottery Green Challenge this year.

From the group of 25 startups, these are the six Dutch contenders who have a chance to win a final spot and create an international impact on environment and the world's well-being:

Sustainable water pump: aQysta
aQysta supplies sustainable water pumps that use the flow of rivers. As a result, no fuel or electricity is needed.

Plant box remains warm thanks to soap bubbles: BBBLS
BBBLS makes climate-neutral greenhouses by using smart soap bubble insulation in a double roof construction. BBBLS claims to be able to save up to 90 percent of the heating costs.

Circular coconut: GoodHout
Goodhut turns coconut waste into an alternative to wood. The idea is to reduce the carbon footprint from the burning harvests in coconut-producing countries.

Less food waste in restaurants: Orbisk
Orbisk is the new name of Zero Food Waste. It automatically scans food waste in kitchens, so that a restaurant can adjust processes and purchases and reduce food waste.

'UnPlastic' from residual flows: Outlander Materials
'UnPlastic' is the compostable plastic challenger that Outlander Materials makes from the (residual) flows from the food industry.

Ecologically responsible underwater construction: Reef systems
Jesse Mick de Bont and Maxim Robbe Dijkstra are working with ReefSystems on environmentally friendly construction systems for the maritime sector. With this, companies can stimulate biodiversity and improve the health of the oceans.

5 MISTAKES STARTUPS SHOULD NOT MAKE ❌

1. Doing it alone.

It is incredibly hard to tackle all the issues of the starting company alone. A little help from friends and professional colleagues is important for startup launching.

2. Neglecting the business plan.

A solid business plan plays a vital role in the future success of a startup. It serves as a guide in the right direction. Whenever the company is stuck, referring to the business plan can help to determine the right set of actions.

3. Poor money handling

Having money is a big deal. A founder may be tempted to blow through a lot of cash pretty quickly, spending on unnecessary expenses. That’s why a new business needs proper financial management. Make sure to get help from someone good with numbers.

4. Being unable to pivot.

Every entrepreneur will say that nothing ever goes as planned. But being able to pivot is part of the game. At one time Nokia had a paper mill and made rubber boots. Today, it's a telecommunications company.

5. Thinking too small.

Investor Paul Graham, the founder of startup incubator Y Combinator said that many entrepreneurs believe it’s safer to target a smaller crowd to avoid the competition. However, "You can only avoid competition by avoiding good ideas.”

Tips on how Dutch BV holding structure can help to save taxes

During this event Lorena Cruz and Jeroen Holthaus of Holthaus Advies (www.holthausadvies.nl) will explain how to decrease risk and save tax by using the Dutch BV Holding structure.

90% of Dutch entrepreneurs hold their BV via a personal Holding BV.

There’s even a Dutch fiscal saying: ‘1 BV is geen BV’.

But why is the Dutch BV Holdingstructure exactly so advantageous from a tax and legal perspective?

Lorena and Jeroen will gladly share the tips and tricks about this beneficial structure. Paying attention will decrease business risk and save (a lot) of taxes.

Holthaus Advies is an accountancy and consultancy firm situated in the very heart of Amsterdam. The core business of Holthaus Advies consists of bookkeeping, compiling annual accounts, salary administration and filing tax returns.

Yet we go a lot further than most accountancy firms: as an extension of our financial and tax practice, we also provide tax and legal advice. In addition, Holthaus Advies has a commercially inspired corporate finance department.

We believe it is our obligation to help others. We have initiated Account Your Future (AYF), whereby New Dutch Citizens (status holders) with a financial background are trained to become finance professionals in The Netherlands. AYF is not profit driven and is supported by fellow financial administration and accountancy firms, law firms, banks and the Holthaus managers.
