Behind Every Young Learner Is a Parent Who Said Yes
Haj. Aisha Bilya Yukubu came to the Kids Summer Coding Camp graduation as a parent of two graduates, and what she said stayed with us.
She started this journey last year with her son. Then she realized his sister needed to be in that room too, so this year she brought them both.
What she noticed was not only the code.
"I really appreciate the way they discipline the kids. And another issue is how they make them to be courageous, because every project they did, they make sure they are out and to defend themselves."
She made a point we think about often. Adults pay good money to learn public speaking. Her children picked it up while learning to build things, simply because every project ends with a child standing in front of a room, explaining their own work and answering for it.
"My kids are really doing amazing things. They are always looking forward to Toko Academy. This is our second year, and I promise to always bring them."
She also left us with a challenge: make it possible for children to keep learning after the holidays end. Her two are in boarding school, so weekend classes in Yola are not realistic, and as she rightly said, computer knowledge is not something you upgrade once a year.
We heard you, ma. We are working on it.
Thank you, Mrs. Aisha, for two years of trust, for two children we have loved teaching, and for telling us the truth about what families like yours actually need.
