UNAUTHORIZED ACCOUNT TAKEDOWNS ARE ILLEGAL:
UNDERSTANDING NIGERIA’S CYBERCRIME LAWS
It has become necessary to enlighten the promoter of Benue Anonymøus and the general public regarding ongoing activities in the Benue social media space.
No individual, private group, or unauthorized entity possesses the legal right or privilege to take down another person's Facebook account through hacking, credential manipulation, or unauthorized access.
1. Exclusive Authority of Meta (Facebook)
Platform moderation, content removal, account suspensions, and page takedowns are governed strictly by Meta’s Terms of Service and Community Standards.
Only Meta administrators or automated systems operating on Meta’s behalf, possess the legal and technical authority to disable, restrict, or take down an account.
Accessing another user's account, altering credentials, or executing cyberattacks (such as mass reporting exploits, unauthorized system intrusions, or account hijacking) to force a page offline constitutes unauthorized access.
Claiming to act as a self-appointed "sanitizer" of the Benue social media space without direct authorization from Meta is an illegal cyber offense.
Under Nigerian law, extrajudicial account takedowns via unauthorized access or digital vigilantism are strictly illegal.
Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act (as amended).
Unauthorized Access (Sections 6, 14 & 16): Strictly prohibits gaining unauthorized access to computer systems, networks, or digital data.
Anyone who accesses, tampers with, or disables another person’s digital account without authorization commits a punishable offense involving fines and custodial sentences.
IDENTITY THEFT & IMPERSONATION (Section 22). Penalizes impersonating another individual or platform official online. Falsely claiming authority to "sanitize" Meta's platform constitutes unlawful interference and fraud.
Legal Remedies for Cyberbullying and Harassment.
While Section 24 of the Cybercrimes Act criminalizes cyberstalking, harassment, and severe online threats, this law does not empower individuals to take the law into their own hands by hacking or illegally shutting down an offender's account.
If an account user is subjected to insults, defamation, or bullying, the only legally authorized remedies in Nigeria are: Utilizing Meta’s reporting mechanisms for abuse, harassment, or violations of Community Standards.
Reporting the matter to the Nigeria Police Force (e.g., the NPF National Cybercrime Centre - NPF-NCCC), the EFCC, or relevant law enforcement agencies to obtain a valid court order requiring Meta to preserve evidence or remove content, and filing a lawsuit in a court of competent jurisdiction for defamation or libel to seek injunctive relief and monetary damages.
My kind advice.
Self-help mechanisms involving unauthorized access to remove social media accounts are illegal under Nigerian law. Any individual claiming responsibility for such acts should be aware that their actions carry criminal liability.
Finally, redress for online bullying, insults, or harassment must strictly follow Meta’s reporting mechanisms or established legal channels through law enforcement and the courts.
