LEARNING OF MATHEMATICS
The knowledge of Mathematics is fundamental to the components of every standard society. The statement conveys the fact that the importance of Mathematics cannot be over- emphasized when the need to give explanation to the existence of our society alongside the things it contains arises. No businessman works out the growth of his business without the Mathematics. The knowledge of science is fundamental to technological applications and to mean that a standard and developed society has well-defined applications of the knowledge of Mathematics. Mathematics can simply be defined as man’s ability to use his logical thinking and reasoning potential to identify a problem and use quantitative approach in solving it. No wonder that in any academic atmosphere, the subject is always given special regard. Not only because it is a foundation to the knowledge of science but also that every man is a potential problem solver. This is to mean that everyone is expected to have a good knowledge of Mathematics.
Then if you sample the opinions of a group of 100 students, some of them would passionately say that they hate Mathematics. The question now is “Why do they hate Mathematics?”
As the writer of this piece, I feel concerned when I hear students saying that they hate Mathematics. I’ll try as much as possible to correct the perceived impression about Mathematics being a difficult subject. Let me start by saying that Mathematics is one of the easiest subjects. It is a foundational subject and anyone seeking knowledge must first lay the foundation. The best way to lay the foundation is to develop INTEREST in it. As a student, the subject would ever appear difficult to you if you don’t have interest for it. Your interest shows the passion you have to acquire the knowledge and the subject would appear SIMPLE as long as the passion drives you.
A number of students hate Mathematics because of the following reasons:
*Lack of interest *Wrong Impression *Attitude towards Mathematics Tutor *Discipline
In life, one thing is to identify a problem; another thing is to develop INTEREST for solving it. The problem remains as long as there is no interest to solve it. The interest gives birth to PASSION and the passion attracts you to the solutions that a problem could have. If you are a student and you stand out to say that you hate MATHEMATICS, re-lay your foundation and build INTEREST in it.
For the students who say that they hate Mathematics: this is solely because they have a “WRONG IMPRESSION” about it. If a survey is carried out and opinions are sampled, the responses would be that anything that has to do with Mathematics is difficult. In my analysis, one reason for the responses is that the respondents concerned do not have foundation built with interest on the subject and another reason is that they have a wrong impression about it. The right impression about Mathematics is that it is a very simple and easy subject. Its concepts are very clear and one’s ability to think and reason makes them easier.
Attitude towards the Mathematics tutor is another fact that makes some students say that they hate Mathematics. Question a few students concerning the reason why they hate Mathematics, they would simply tell you it’s because they don’t like the Mathematics Tutor. The fastest way to pick interest in a subject is to like the Tutor. This goes a long way in making the subject very simple for you. It gives you room to interact with the teacher when you have a problem which affords you opportunity to get solution to the problem.
The subject “Mathematics” is a subject that requires DISCIPLINE not only from the students but also the teacher taking it. When the discipline is absent in the teacher, He takes the subject not to the satisfaction of the students and when subject discipline is absent in students, it may result in hatred for the subject. For the subject to appear simple both the tutor and students must apply a lot of discipline concerning the subject matter “MATHEMATICS”.
