HOW TO KNOW YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE
Some of you are out here marketing to everybody like you’re selling oxygen. Relax.
Not everyone is your customer. In fact, if your audience is “anybody with money,” you’ll soon join the “anybody with debt” association.
Knowing your target audience is not just some fancy marketing jargon.
It’s literally the difference between your post getting shares and sales or just pity likes from your friends.
Let’s break it down before you waste another month pushing content to the wrong crowd:
1. Who actually needs what you sell?
Forget “everybody.” Be specific. Are you selling to small business owners in Lagos or busy mums in Abuja who hate cooking but love good food? The more specific, the easier to find them.
2. Who can actually afford you?
Stop pricing like Gucci but targeting people who only buy during Black Friday. There’s no shame in matching your price to your market, but be honest about it.
3. Who already spends money on similar products?
If they’re already buying from your competitors, that’s a clue. Study them—where do they hang out online? What do they complain about? Fix that in your offer.
4. Who vibes with your style?
Not every potential customer will like your tone, your branding, or your vibe—and that’s fine. The ones who “get you” will stay loyal (and pay faster).
5. Who do you want to work with for the long run?
Some customers pay well but will give you blood pressure. Choose your audience like you’d choose a housemate—you’ll be stuck with them for a while.
Knowing your target audience is like knowing your crush’s love language. It saves you from trying too hard for the wrong person and helps you win over the right one faster.
Because marketing to “everyone” is like winking in the dark—you know what you’re doing, but nobody else does.
