Complete. Our cohort has now mounted panels, wired arrays, matched and installed battery banks, and commissioned inverters, real hands-on solar installation from start to finish. ☀️🔋

Next week, we leave power systems behind entirely and step into microcontrollers Arduino, ESP32, and the programming logic that powers automation and IoT. A completely different kind of engineering, same rigor.

Have a great weekend, team. 🚀

This week we went from mounting panels to fully commissioning a working solar system, hands-on, start to finish. That's the exact process behind every real installation our field team runs. ☀️🧠

What surprised you most about hands-on solar work vs. the theory? 👇

Today we are taking a fully installed system consisting of panels, charge controller, battery bank and inverter, through a complete commissioning checklist, exactly as our field team does for client handovers: verifying every connection, testing under real load, confirming safe cutoffs work, and documenting the final configuration for future maintenance. ☀️📋

This is the difference between an installation that works today and a system a client can trust for years, because someone verified every link in the chain before walking away.

We are focusing on reading inverter error codes and fault indicators: overload warnings, low battery cutoffs, and overheat shutdowns each point to a different root cause, and knowing the difference saves hours of blind troubleshooting on-site. ⚠️🔋
Our students practice tracing a simulated fault back to its actual source instead of just swapping parts and hoping the same diagnostic discipline our field engineers use with real client systems.

Real talk: what's more nerve-wracking flipping the switch on a fully wired solar system for the first time, or waiting for exam results? 😅⚡️

Comment your pick.

Today we focus on installing and commissioning an inverter, the final link that turns stored DC battery power into usable AC. Beyond just wiring it in, commissioning means checking output voltage and frequency match grid standards (220V, 50Hz in Nigeria), confirming the transfer switch behavior if it's a hybrid unit, and testing under an actual load, not just powering on empty. 🔌⚡️
An inverter that powers on fine but hasn't been tested under real load is an inverter you don't actually know works yet.

Every battery bank needs its own fusing between the battery and the rest of the system, sized to the battery's maximum discharge current, plus a proper grounding point, because a short circuit directly across a large battery bank can deliver enormous current in milliseconds, far more dangerous than a typical household fault. ⚠️🔋

This isn't optional safety theater. Our students learned it's often the single most overlooked protection point in DIY solar setups.

If one battery in a bank reads 12.6V and another reads 11.9V, should you connect them together as they are? ⚡️🔋
Drop your reasoning below.

Our focus: physically connecting a battery bank. When batteries are wired in series (to reach system voltage) or parallel (to increase capacity), they need to be matched: same age, same capacity, same charge state, otherwise the weakest battery drags down the whole bank and ages faster than the rest. 🔋⚡️

Our students learned to check open-circuit voltage on each battery before connecting them together, catching a mismatched or weak battery before it becomes a bank-wide problem.

Every charge controller has a maximum input voltage and current rating exceed either, and you risk damaging it permanently. Tonight's session: reading a charge controller's datasheet and working backward to figure out the maximum safe series/parallel configuration for a given panel. 📋⚡️

This is a step field installers sometimes skip when they're rushing and it's one of the more expensive mistakes to make, since a fried charge controller isn't cheap to replace.
