What Will You Need This Computer For?
Before you buy any computer, no matter if it’s used or new, ask yourself what you plan on doing with it. If your regular computer use involves tons of apps and web services, a lightweight system will probably work for you. If you need more desktop horsepower for gaming, design, or video editing, make sure any used system you consider is up to the challenge. Here are a few other key issues to keep in mind:

Portability: Are you looking for a laptop that you can take with you wherever you go? Size and weight will be a concern, then. Look for a machine that is small enough that you can transport it comfortably. However, remember that portability often presents a tradeoff in features and power.

Power: When buying any laptop, especially a used one, find out how much it will cost to replace the battery or AC adapter. Depending on how the system was previously used, its battery might no longer hold a decent charge or it might be through its recharge cycles altogether. This is definitely a concern if you plan to use the computer in multiple locations.

They specialize in manufacturing the Central Processing Unit (CPU chips) for wireless telecommunications, HDTVs, DVD etc. Their largest demands come from the Chinese mobile tech market.

You can read: Four notable giant companies of our time that were swallowed by others

From that little description of MTK, you can deduce by now that when we say MTK phones, we are talking of phones that make use of MTK chips.

Since MTK are largest suppliers of their chips to the Chinese mobile tech markets, it now tells us that most of the mobile devices produced in China are MTK devices.

Note: I said most and not all, because there is other notable semiconductor companies aside from MTK that also serve the Chinese market and other mobile tech markets across the globe. For example we also have other notable one like SPD (Spreadtrum).

You can also read: 5 reasons your laptop is plugged in but displays not charging

But we are focusing on how to detect MTK devices when you are on hand with them. Since these chips are hardware components and with models embedded inside the devices, it will be difficult to tell if they are MTK devices, SPD and others by looking at or handling the device without uncoupling.

It is a common idea that most ranges of Chinese phones like Tecno, Gionee, Infinix etc. are MTK devices. But as we mentioned above, you can’t categorically tell by mere seeing or handling them.

In-fact what I want to tell you now will even go a long way helping you in differentiating original Android devices from fake ones. In other words, cloned phones from other manufacturers mimicking original manufacturers like Samsung, hTC, LG and the rest can easily be detected with this method.

Recommended: Popular touch-screen smart phone game, Temple run to be replicated in a movie

Now for you to really determine whether your android devices are MTK devices or not, follow the simple steps below;

= =>With your android device on hand, just head to Google Play Store.

= =>Search for and download this simple and free app CPU-Z

= =>After installation, launch the app and you will see all your phones and hardware components models. You can see image below.

= =>While on the open app, you will see about 5 menu buttons at the top; SOC (System on Chips), System, Battery, Sensors and About menus.
CPU-Z for android

On the SOC menu, you will see the chip and model of your device boldly written at the top portion of your screen. On the other way round you can also navigate to the system menu to see the hardware component. The models for MTK devices always start with Mt prefix, while that of Spreadtrum often start with SPD or SC.

Must read: How to use your laptop battery to elongate its natural lifespan

You can use this app to detect other models and chipsets of any android device. Now for those cloned Samsung devices, when you use this app and find out that the chipsets are MTK, it should tell you that it is not from signed Samsung original products, as Samsung have their self-manufactured chipset as in the Exynos and aside from theirs, they also prefer using American chipsets like Qualcomm Snapdragon, Nvidia etc to MTK chipset.

You will notice that I was able to use single stone in this piece to kill two birds for you, and so if you are happy with this, please you can use the comment box to express yourself and also share to your friends so they can also gain from this knowledge.

Gartner’s smartphone sales report for Q2 2014 is out and it paints a bleak picture for smartphone sales in the future.

Growth hasn’t been this slow since Q2 2013 — the year the iPhone 5s was released — when 225 million smartphones were sold, surpassing sales of feature phones for the first time.

This time around, sales grew just 13.5 percent over last year. What’s more interesting is that 96.8 percent of smartphone sales are now made up by iOS and Android devices, leaving just 3.2 percent for others like Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Firefox OS.

Notably, China is driving the majority of smartphone sales in 2015, making up 30 percent of sales this quarter but Gartner notes that China has “reached saturation” and is to blame for overall sales slowing.

We might be reaching the very middle of the sales curve and seeing a point where the constantly growing industry finally reaches its peak and slows as it becomes harder to reach those who don’t already own a smartphone.

The saddest story in the figures is the breakdown of phone by operating system. BlackBerry now makes up just 0.7 percent quarter’s smartphones sales, compared to Android’s whopping 83.8 percent.

Back in Q2 2013 BlackBerry had 5.2 percent of smartphone sales trailing Nokia’s Symbian on 5.9 percent.

Android’s size continues to be staggering: it controlled over 83 percent of smartphone sales last quarter despite many of its hardware partners struggling to create phones people actually want to buy.

It paints an even more contentious picture for the third-place mobile operating system, Windows Phone, which was only able to grab just 2.6 percent of sales overall last quarter.

In part, Microsoft’s recent strategy adjustments could be to blame: it’s backed further away from the phone platform, discouraging potential customers from investing in it with a lack of a flagship phone, the write off of the Nokia purchase and the delay of Windows 10 for phones.

Smartphone sales look very different from just two years ago, when Microsoft’s sales were surging and Nokia’s home-grown operating system was still on the list.

There are a number of different smartphone reports out there, like IDC’s quarterly one, which can conflict with each other though the reports all paint a future where Android leaves every other mobile platform in the dust.
