Satellite technology was first used in the late 1950's. The Russians were able to launch Sputnik in 1957, and the United States put Explorer I into space just a year later. However, satellites at this time where used by NASA and the government, and television channels were still broadcast by cables.
In the middle of the 1970's, satellite television began to see commercial use. One of the first examples of its use was when HBO began to be broadcast to many homes in 1975. The use was minimal at first because people did not have the right equipment, but it began to grow very quickly. In fact, Ted Turner contributed to the change in 1976, the year after HBO became nationally available, by using satellites. By the late 1980's and the 1990's, satellite television was very popular in America, and it continues to compete with cable television providers in the modern day.
