The Six Months in Akure That Changed My Perspective
About this time last year, my friend and Egbon, Bayo Rojugbokan, called me with exciting news: he had just been appointed as Chairman of the Ondo State Internal Revenue Service (ODIRS).
He asked me to come to Akure and help rebuild the agencyโs tech stack as part of the plan to digitalize the state.
For six months, I immersed myself fully. I worked with staff, acted as Head of IT, reviewed infrastructure, designed new systems, and saw firsthand how citizens interacted with government services.
That experience showed me one thing clearly: states must go beyond systems that just collect revenue. What we need are platforms that manage citizens, ministries, and agencies holistically โ while still ensuring revenue collection.
