Do you know you are better of as a small business buying the right network switches. Before buying a switch you need to consider the following
1. What would be connected to the switches?
a. Servers: If you would be connecting servers, you need to know the network interface speed of the servers, this would help select a switch with the right port speed. We have port speed starting from 10Mbps per seconds up to 10,000Mbps (10Gbps). So if your server is shipped with a 10Gbps interface card, you should buy a switch that can support up to 10Gbps on a single interface card.
b. Desktop or laptop or printer. Most laptops would support 100 or 1000Mbps, so you would be okay with a switch that supports 1000Mbs. Most times the switches would also support lower speed.
c. Wireless access points or IP Phones or IP Camera: If you are connecting a wireless access point to the switch, you may want to consider a switch that support Power over Ethernet (PoE). PoE allows a device to get its power supply from the switch, with PoE you do not need a separate power supply for your Wireless access points. This also applies to IP phones, IP camera and other devices such as thin clients that support PoE. So when selecting this switch, you need to consider the power requirement of each device. Compute the total power requirement and buy the switch that can power the devices.
