Very annoying!
Builder, Dr, Engr, Honorable! Ooghini..
Obsession with titles is a sad Naija thing, but some states in Southeast are taking it to a primitive height. Honorable, Builder, Dr. Engr. Pharmacist, and many more. Already, anyone who has ever voted or seen an election underway titles themselves 'Honorable' there.
Imagine one person bearing Dr. Engr. What is the point? What are you trying to prove?
The most irksome of these useIess titles is Builder. Chai. This is the most local, primeval, and primordial of them all. What?? Low self-esteem ri sad.
Do you know that I had to condemn 2 pages I soId because I did not add Dr and Engineer titles to their names while changing it? The obsession with titles is manic in a particular state in Southeast and it is alarming. I had convinced them not to add the titles, but they changed their minds once they saw their own names, saying it looked ordinary. How is your name ordinary because it doesn't have 'Dr. Engineer before it? Damn. I had to get them 2 new pages.
One insisted that I must add 'Builder' to his name when changing the name of a page he bought. I appealed and explained taya, and later he listened and was happy he never had to bandy around Builder in his name. I asked him why he was obsessed with the title, and he said he believed it made people see him as important lol. Chai. I told him he is vital, whether or not he holds any title.
When I was elected as a legislator, I refused to use the title 'Honorable.' I detest that word for myself and never use it, nor would I ever use it. I'll address my colleagues and others with the honorific, but I won't use it near my name or refer to myself by it.
The title obsessed: As una dey go abroad or dey see that oyibo go by their names, even medical doctors and lawyers, research doctorates, professional doctorates, the wealthiest men on earth, e no dey humble una?
Naija Politicians are the hardest to convince that they don't need to add any title to their name on their page. The 1st time I got contract to package a page and manage it for a sitting governor, his media team where shocked that I wrote his name as is, I was summoned to his office, my heart was beating gbimgbim, I had to think on my feet, I came up with a great defence, I said to him and his aides, sir, anyone can add a Dr, Engr or some powerful title to their name. Still, only you can bear your name. It is a mighty name as everyone know this name is the Governor of so so and so state, my people, that was an end of discusstion defence, the Governot looked at his aides and said, Maria is a smart girl, let's go with her idea, she knows what's she is doing. Hahaha, mtuaturide, the man no sabi say I don dai finish, as I think they wan commot food from my mouth, faya my oversabi a*z. Since then, to convince other politicians, I've been managing their pages to use their names only; I flash the governor's page, and they soji.
In a country that is basically in darkness, no light, you are obsessing over crass, usless titles. And for the states in the Southeast obsessed with various colorful titles, it is an unhealthy sign of low self-esteem, insecurity, and backwardness. Enough. This is 2025, not 1901; get with the times. Leadership is not a position or a title; it's action and example.
