World Malaria Day | Ending Malaria Starts With Innovation

Malaria remains one of the world’s most persistent public health challenges, claiming lives and placing immense pressure on health systems especially across Africa.

Ending malaria will require more than treatment alone. It demands collaboration, bold ideas, stronger health systems, and sustained investment in solutions that work where they are needed most.

At Innovate Health Hub, we believe the future of healthcare lies in building scalable, practical innovations that save lives and strengthen communities.

This World Malaria Day, let us recommit to action, research, partnership, and innovation.

Because ending malaria is possible and it starts with innovation.

Recent data from TechCabal Insights on funding trends in Q1 2026 highlights the continued dominance of fintech, which accounted for 31% of total investment.

In contrast, healthtech attracted approximately $17M during the same period.

While this figure is smaller relative to sectors such as logistics, energy, and agriculture, it underscores an important consideration for the broader innovation ecosystem.

Healthcare systems across many African countries continue to face persistent challenges, including limited access to care, workforce shortages, and gaps in service delivery. Healthtech has the potential to address many of these issues through scalable and context-appropriate solutions.

However, the level of investment suggests that the sector may still be underprioritized relative to its importance.

Key reflections:
✅ The need for more intentional capital directed toward health system priorities
✅ Greater emphasis on solutions that integrate into existing care pathways, not operate in silos
✅ Increased support for locally driven innovation that reflects real contextual needs
✅ A shift toward long-term, impact-oriented investment models rather than short funding cycles

This map of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems across Africa shows that many countries are using platforms such as DHIS2, OpenMRS, and Bahmni.
Coverage is growing but the scale and integration are still developing. Here are a few reflections:

✅ Adoption does not mean integration:
Several countries run multiple systems at the same time. When these systems do not connect, data remains fragmented and its value for care and decision making is reduced.

✅ Clear opportunity for innovation:
There is strong potential for solutions that connect platforms, improve usability, and support frontline health workers with real time insights.

✅ Focus needs to shift to patient care:
Many systems are designed mainly for reporting. The next step is ensuring they improve clinical decisions and patient outcomes.

As digital health continues to grow across Africa, one question remains:

📍How do we move from adoption to real impact?
