NCC Response To Data Consumption On Android And Blackberry Phones (See Why Blackberry Sub Is Cheaper). The NCC as a regulator is responsible for promotion of fair
competition in the communications industry and protection of
communications services and facilities providers from misuse of
market power or anti-competitive and unfair practices by other
service or facilities providers or equipment suppliers.
The issue of data usage on Blackberry and Android smart phones has
been generating a lot of comments lately and the Commission has a duty
to protect and inform all stakeholders in the industry on all issues of
concern.
RIM, the manufacturer of BlackBerry, utilizes a special compression
algorithm to serve users of Blackberry handsets who have subscribed for
Blackberry internet service. Whenever such a subscriber browses the
internet and opens a webpage, a request is sent via the handset’s browser
requesting for the page to be downloaded to the phone. This request is
channeled to RIM’s gateway in Canada, which fetches the webpage,
compresses it and sends the compressed data back to the BlackBerry
phone as a download.
On an Android phone, the request to open a webpage by telephone
subscribers is sent to the gateway of the network operator which then
processes the information and sends back the page to the Android phone
as a download (the data is not compressed – thereby requiring more
bandwidth).
The amount of bandwidth uploaded is identical between both Blackberry
and Android phones, the difference lies in the fact that most of what
subscribers do on their phones is to download content which varies on
both. BlackBerry is indirectly subsidizing bandwidth by compressing the
content downloaded by subscribers.
In effect, an internet subscriber using an Android smartphone to open a
webpage may be downloading 100KB of data, while a subscriber using a
Blackberry opening the very same webpage would be downloading 25KB
due to the compression of data by RIM.
Bandwidth in Nigeria is an expensive resource, because most data is
transferred wirelessly. This is the reason why the NCC is promoting
wired infrastructure around the country through such projects as WIN
(Wire Nigeria) as well promoting a Broadband Roadmap for the country
which will greatly reduce the cost of bandwidth thereby reducing the cost
of browsing the internet on smartphones.

Mi-Fone the FIRST African Mobile Devices brand launches in Nigeria with Oju
Mi-Fone the FIRST African Mobile Devices Brand established in 2008 launches its new range of innovative Smartphones into the Nigeria market . The Smartphones operate on the Android system and come pre embedded with localized apps such as Nigerian taxi app EasyTaxi, Nigerian music Blog app Singuu , the innovative music upload service app called PureSolo and the famous 360Nobs Nigerian social media app . The Mi-Fone range will also feature the company owned OJU Africa app

OJU Africa first garnered international attention with the launch of the first ethnically diverse emoticons. In fact in the past three weeks the Afro Emoticons from Oju Africa have had the world abuzz, with over 22000 downloads of the free app from Google Play in just 4 days, of which the majority of those downloads have originated from the United States.

Powered by Mi-Fone, the first African mobile devices brand, “Oju” literally meaning “faces” in the Yoruba language from Nigeria, is an innovation born out of the motherland. And it is here in the motherland that the full range of 65 Afro Emoticons are to be revealed at the Nigerian launch scheduled to take place at the luxurious new venue Miliki in Victoria Island , Lagos on Monday May 26th . The event promises to be a major success with major Celebrities, Media and Business Leaders in attendance

Designed to be used across all Android platforms, the Oju’s will be released shortly on IOS and other platforms. Yet the digital space is not the only area they are intended to live. “Oju is an African innovation, an African character that we have no doubt will become an iconic character across the globe. Africa does not have its own Mickey Mouse or Hello Kitty until now with Oju,” remarked Alpesh Patel, CEO Oju Africa and Group CEO of Mi-Group International Ltd. “Oju is a licensed African character which will be licensed out via Emoticons in the digital space, and via a traditional character in industries such as FMCG, Entertainment and Fashion. In fact, the launch in Lagos will be followed by Oju Africa’s attendance at the prestigious Licensing Expo 2014 held in Las Vegas, USA from June 17-19th 2014. Making us one of the few African manufacturers to be present at the Expo.”

Yet for a continent synonymous with smiling faces, these unique Emoticons are bound to make those wide smiles become wider, as a portion of all licencing fees generated will be donated to the Mi-Oju Children’s Foundation which was officially launched in April in association with Mi-Fone Board Advisor, and globally celebrated bestselling leadership author – Robin Sharma. “The purpose of the Foundation is to empower and educate the Children of Africa via ICT,” explains Patel. “The launch Oju and the Mi-Oju Children’s Foundation with Robin Sharma will undoubtedly help us achieve our dream of digitally uniting Africa, liberating Africans from digital exclusion. In fact with the launch of the Oju Africa Afro Emoticons we are sharing African soul, funk and unparalleled smiles with the world and allowing the world to help empower African children in return,” explains Patel.

To download the free set of Afro Emoticons one simply needs to visit Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=oju.e

Low-cost Blackberry Z3 ‘jarkata’ Specifications - From all indications, Blackberry seems to be making moves to
regain its position in the smartphone market, after making it
possible to run Android Apks on BB10 devices via a recent
update, Blackberry is set to release one of its low cost BB10
smartphones; if an alleged rumour of a BB10 device ”
Blackberry Z3 ” code named “Jakarta” is actually true.
According to a post on N4BB, Blackberry Z3 is due for launch at
the MWC 2014 event next week, Blackberry Z3 is speculated to
cost $150 (around #24,000) which I think is a cheap price for a
BB10 device. This is actually a cool move to capture the low-
income earners by a “tested” and probably “trusted” brand .
According to the specifications available, Blackberry Z3 will
come with a 5″ 24-bit colour LCD display having a 540 x 960
pixels resolution. It will be driven by a 1.2GHz dual-core
processor, Adreno 305 GPU coupled with 1.5GB RAM and 8GB
of inbuilt storage, no details on the expandable storage. It’ll be
bundled with a 5-megapixel auto-focus rear camera with flash
technology, a front facing 1.1-megapixel. It is also rumored to
be powered by a 2650mAh battery. The charging port is said to
be fitted on the bottom of the device and the power on-off
button on the left side of the device
This is said to be one of the first low-end phones to be
released from the stable of Blackberry Ltd. We hope to see
more of this device in coming weeks and its gonna be
awesome.
Personally am expecting this device to be a game
changer, shake off a lot of competing devices with similar or
even lower specifications considering the price.

HOW TO FIX BLACKBERRY PHONES COMMON PROBLEMS. Although blackberry is popular enough to keep it’s fan base
happy, it is not untouched from the mighty glitches, which
makes it’s users frustrated. Blackberry has faced many up’s
and down’s which somehow restricted it’s growth cycle
over other companies in the industry.
Here are some other common
issues blackberry users come
along regularly:
Problem: Your Blackberry gets hot or warm
Solution: Your Blackberry may get hot/ warm and
temperature of phone may rise. The Blackberry Torch 9800
users are facing this problem more than others. This is
most probably because of the reason that you have several
applications running on your phone which you may not
know.
Another reason is that if you have constantly data
connection open (like streaming music, app that uses GPS,
weather apps, Loopt), your phone will get hot and loose
battery fast.
To see what apps are running, go to Options > Device
Application
Management (you can also hold the Menu key on left of
your trackpad/ rackwheel, which brings up everything that
is running).
Close the unwanted apps by opening the app, click the
menu and select close at the end.
Problem: The Blackberry screen frozen
Solution: This is a problem that can happen to any
Blackberry device where the device gets stuck and screen
is frozen. There are two ways to fix this problem. You can
soft reset your Blackberry by pressing Alt+Cap+Delete
keys together.
If this technique does not solve the problem, you can
perform hard reset. Find the Reset button on back the
device (which can be near the bottom, under battery cover)
and press the button with a pin etc. You do not lose any
data using any of these methods.
Problem: Blackberry call logs and messages get
deleted
If you find out that suddenly your Blackberry’s call logs and
saved messaged are deleted and disappeared without any
reason, here is solution to the problem. This happens if you
have large amount of images, ringtones, games etc and
your memory is at or near its capacity. The phone will start
deleting oldest call logs and text messages (SMS) entries to
free up some space.
To determine the free memory, go to Options, then Status,
which will show you free memory. You can increase free
space by deleting some stored stuff on your phone.
Problem: Blackberry does not send/ receive emails
Solution: Blackberry email problem can be due to GPRS
services.
GPRS is what allows your device to access data. The first
thing to do is to perform soft reset and if that does not work
perform hard reset (see methods above).
After that check your wireless antenna signal strength. The
antenna should show GPRS. If you can call and browse web
that means your GSM service is available.
Problem: Blackberry bluetooth problem
If you are trying to send some files, music, photos etc from
another device (i.e Nokia, Sony Ericsson etc) to your
Blackberry and cannot do so via Bluetooth, it is because
there is a special way to send stuff from another company
device to Blackberry.
•To transfer the files (MP3, video etc) from another device
to BB, follow these steps.
•Pair your Blackberry and your other device Blackberry
•Choose the music files or other media that you want to
transfer to your BB from other device
•On your Blackberry, open ‘Media’ folder and press menu
‘BB
Logos’ and you will see an option ‘receive using Bluetooth’
•From your other phone, send the files to your BB.
Already connected, your Blackberry will ask you to accept
or refuse transfer
•Accept the data transfer and you are done
Problem: Blackberry Sync problem
If you have Blackberry sync problem when you try to sync
with Microsoft Outlook or calender/contact sync, follow
these steps to get rid of this problem.
•Click on ‘Reset settings’ in Organiser
•This will reset your phone’s Calendar, Address Book,
Memo Pad and Task to default
•You now have to configure Calendar, Address Book, Memo
Pad by clicking ‘Configure Setting’
•After completing, you should be able to sync your
Blackberry with Outlook or any other medium.
Problem: Blackberry trackpad stopped working?
This problem is in Blackberry 8520 and other similar
devices where trackpad stop working without any reason.
To resolve the trackpad problem you should start from
updating your firmware to latest version.
Another thing that worked for many users with this problem
is a battery pull. Remember your device should be ON when
you pull out battery, wait for 30-60 seconds before you
replace the battery. This should solve the problem.
Problem: Blackberry synchronizing problem
Another Blackberry synchronizing problem is when after
synchronizing, email messages deleted from Blackberry are
still there or messages deleted from Outlook are not
deleted. Same thing can happen with email messages.
Blackberry website has complete guide to solve this
problem.
Problem: Trackball stopped working
This happens mostly with old devices. If your phone’s
trackball stopped working that is probably because of dust.
You can clean the ball by tuning phone upside down and
rolling it on a clean sheet of paper. Alternatively, you can
change the damaged trackball with a new one.
If you have any other problems that are not mentioned in
this post, please kindly put it in the comment box below.

Now, Will The X Even Save Nokia this Time?..............With anticipation, we waited for Nokia X amidst rumors and facts
being passed around. We all saw it coming and anticipated the
arrival of the first Nokia Android device. In an article I published
two years go, I raised this question about what is likely to
happen if Nokia developed an Android device, this was even
before the the Nokia X stories started flying around.
The smartphone market is already crowded – HTC,
Samsung,Motorola and the rest of them have already
bombarded the market with Android OS. Nokia might not
succeed jumping in…What Nokia needs is a capable and
consistent OS and a very good marketing strategy.
That’s a quote from the article. Nokia wasn’t wrong adopting
Android but there’s still something Nokia isn’t getting right.
Honestly, I was disappointed with Nokia X. I vowed to buy the
device when it gets released but the specifications turned me
off.
I was expecting a powerful device but all they had to offer were
three devices all having less than 1GB RAM. I was expecting a
device that runs KitKat but you have to get used to the forked
version of Andoid 4.1.2 which is not likely to be upgradeable
considering the RAM.
Were you as disappointed as I was?
What’s Nokia’s Game Plan?
Perhaps Nokia is trying to see how this new device would be
received before coming out with a high-end device but I they
should have made a more power entry into the Android market.
Well, we know these devices are cheap, affordable and likely to
gain popularity as low-end / mid-range Android devices but still,
the only way for Nokia to be an authority is to have a number of
popular high-end devices.
The X devices right now won’t do that.
If Nokia plans to have a device to compete with the likes of
Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One and Sony Xperia Z, they need to
come up with a much better device.
I’ve never used a WP phone because I’m not really attracted to
the platform but a high-end Nokia Android phone might make
me hold a Nokia phone again.
If there’s ever gonna be a Nokia ###, I hope it has more to
offer, gets a better RAM, sports a faster processor and
upgradeable to the latest Android OS.

Tecno R7: Full Device Specifications, Availability & Price in Nigeria. Tecno Mobile is set to release another flagship product as
expected. The device was leaked a few days ago and I checked
Tecno’s official website this morning to confirm if the rumors
we’ve been hearing about Tecno R7 is actually true. A facebook
post from Tecno Mobile Nigeria official page also
confirmed it:
Well, this is Tecno’s biggest product so far in terms of
specifications and speed! An octa-core device with 2GB RAM and
Gorilla glass sounds like a really big deal but we’re yet to hold
this device to see what it really feels like and give a hands-on
review.
However, as good as the RAM and processor sound, almost
everyone was a bit disappointed with the OS. I was expecting
Tecno to launch its first Android Kitkat device but unfortunately,
Tecno R7 also comes with 4.2 Jellybean just like most of the
devices in the family.
It’s the first Tecno smartphone to come with Gorilla glass and
this device comes with a whooping 16GB ROM, giving you more
free space to play with.
Tecnical Specifications
Operating system: Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
Network: GSM/DCS/WCDMA

Primary camera: 13.0MP BSI AF Flash Light

Price and Availability in Nigeria
This device has only been announced but yet to be released into
