Evans Komen of Soko Fresh tells us the solution to food waste might just be a solar-powered cold room. 

Every year, rural farmers across Africa lose a significant portion of their harvest to drought, pests, and the lack of affordable storage systems. The food is grown but it just doesn't survive long enough to reach the market. 

Soko Fresh is changing that. Their modular cold rooms run entirely on solar power, bringing affordable, off-grid refrigeration directly to farming communities, protecting harvests, stabilizing incomes, and reducing waste at the source. 

This World Environment Month, African Climate Stories is spotlighting local innovators building sustainable, homegrown solutions from the ground up. Soko Fresh is one of them.

African Climate Stories founders Nina and Michael joined changemakers, philanthropists, innovators, and leaders from across the continent at the 2026 in Nairobi, organized by The Rockefeller Foundation and the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation.

We are honoured to share that African Climate Stories has been awarded the Environmental Sustainability Champion Award by the Lagos State Youth Ambassadors, and featured in BusinessDay in recognition of our work advancing environmental stewardship and sustainability through storytelling and community engagement. 

This recognition is deeply meaningful because it reflects something bigger than us; a growing movement of young Africans using storytelling, creativity, and community action to drive climate awareness and environmental responsibility.

What started as a response to the realities of flooding, waste, and climate impacts in our communities has grown into a platform committed to making climate conversations more human, relatable, and actionable across African communities.

To everyone who has supported, collaborated with, amplified, volunteered for, partnered with, or believed in African Climate Stories, this award belongs to all of us. 

And to every young person working quietly to create change in their community: your work matters, even when it feels unseen.

Flip the Switch Roadshow hits the streets of Alimosho, Lagos.

African Climate Stories Community Champions were on-ground to onboard end-users onto the Flip Platform. The goal is to aggregate and connect users directly to financing options, renewable energy products, and solar installers in their area.

At the heart of accelerated renewable energy adoption is a push for energy security and sovereignty, especially across Africa, where 600 million people still live without reliable power.

We also know that African youth are uniquely positioned to confront climate change through their ideas, and enthusiasm. And can create and support solutions that address pressing environmental challenges. These are the people leading the evidence-based design for Campaign.

Climate action doesn't always start in conference rooms. Sometimes it starts on a street corner, with a young champion and a smartphone, telling and sharing solutions and stories that matter.
