The ULN2003A is a popular Darlington transistor array used to interface low-power digital circuits with higher-current loads. Inside the IC are seven Darlington transistor pairs, each acting as a powerful switch that can be controlled by a small input signal from a microcontroller, logic IC, or digital circuit.

Pins 1–7 are the inputs, while pins 10–16 are the corresponding outputs. Pin 8 is ground, and pin 9 is the common connection for the built-in flyback diodes. These protection diodes help absorb voltage spikes generated by inductive loads such as relays, solenoids, and motors, improving circuit reliability.

Each driver stage includes internal resistors and a Darlington pair configuration, providing high current gain and reducing the need for external components. The outputs are designed as open-collector switches, making them ideal for driving loads connected to higher voltages.

Because it combines seven drivers in a single package, the ULN2003A saves board space, simplifies wiring, and reduces component count. Common applications include relay drivers, lamp drivers, LED arrays, stepper motors, solenoids, and general-purpose buffering between logic circuits and power loads.
