Zimbabwe bans exports of lithium concentrate due to “continued malpractices during the exportation of minerals” in the country.

The ban on exports of lithium concentrate is to take effect on 1st January 2027, although Zimbabwe currently has only one lithium sulphate plant, a $400 million sulphate plant completed at Arcadia and owned by the Chinese - Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt.

Zimbabwe's state-owned Sandawana sulphate plant is still at feasibility. Sinomine’s $500 million facility at Bikita and Yahua’s plant at Kamativi are both under construction. Yet the condition that Harare gives for resuming the mineral export as contained in a letter to the Chamber of Mines, is to receive written commitments on timelines for building operational lithium sulphate plants in the country.

This suspension targets exports of all raw minerals and lithium concentrates. The Zimbabwe Lithium Producers’ Association has reportedly requested that the government should move mineral beneficiation deadline to mid-2027.

Chinese smelters turn to copper scrap as shortage of concentrate supply from DR Congo and Chile deepens. Scrap copper accounted for 25.2% of feedstock used in China's refined copper production in the first half of 2026, up 2.7% YoY.

Structural changes in global copper supply chains, especially from DR Congo and Chile, are reshaping Chinese refining operations with significant negative impact which would go round in the global inputs market for AI infrastructure, electronics, battery supply chains, and crypto mining hardware. Chile and DR Congo are the world’s largest and second-largest copper suppliers respectively.

Adverse weather in Chile affected several miners, causing shipment delays. China imported 4.28 million metric tonnes of copper concentrate from Chile in the first half of 2026. Meanwhile, China's imports of copper scrap reached 1.24 million metric tonnes in the first half of 2026, up 8.3% YoY.

In other news, DR Congo, the world’s largest cobalt producer, has banned exports of copper concentrate and cobalt concentrate in a major escalation of its drive to force domestic processing and derive value from its mineral resources. Global operators already exist in the East African country of Congo. From China's CMOC, the world's largest cobalt producer, Glencore, Huayou Cobalt, Zijin Mining, Ivanhoe Mines, to Eurasian Resources Group, every operator must be focused on domestic processing, rather than on exportation of concentrates.

While China's refined copper producers increased their use of scrap-derived feedstocks, they also look to other sources like Nigeria where opportunities abound in concentrate export. Nigeria holds an estimated 10 million metric tonnes of copper reserves. The country increasingly exports high-grade copper concentrate for the international market.

Fragmented supplier base and unverified documentation continue to add compliance issues, cost pressures, and inconsistency of both quality and supply to the raw material procurement for foundries and die casters globally. Meanwhile, current procurement processes for raw materials are disconnected with traditional e-mail based administration.

Igun provides the platform for foundries and global offtakers to coordinate procurement and centralise supplier management in sourcing vetted metals of African origin.

A 4000 metres silver-copper drilling programme in Mushima North, Zambia is gaining momentum as Richard Belcher, Managing Director of TERTIARY MINERALS PLC moves to site.

Tertiary Minerals has launched its largest drilling programme in the southern African country, for near surface oxide copper and copper silver occurrences worth around $4.6 billion. The company projects a significant and highly profitable mining operation with over 58 million ounces of silver oxide equivalent in its Target A1 exploration alone, in Mushina.

While this is a near term target of open-pit near-surface oxide mineralization with discovery of around 30 million tonnes at an average grade of 40-60 grammes per tonnes silver equivalent, in the long term, the UK company plans expansion and deeper drilling with a steady eye on the historical highest grade copper silver occurrences in Zambia.

Tertiary Minerals holds a 90% stake in the Mushima North Project, with the remaining 10% owned by the government of Zambia.
