Pig feeding formula
CREEP FEEDING.
Creep feeding is a way to smoothen the transition from sow's milk to solid feeds with little to no growth retardation for your piglets.
It involves feeding your piglets highly digestible feed materials while they are still suckling.
This practice activates and encourages early gut and digestive enzyme development and this in turn enables the piglet to digest nutrients from feed sources other than milk.
This early introduction encourages feed intake while they are still with the sow and grants them soft landing when they are eventually weaned since poor feed intake and digestion issues are some of the greatest challenges post-weaning and can lead to stalling performance.
Another reason for creep feeding is that it helps reduce the burden the growing piglets exert on the sow which if left unchecked can lead to massive depreciation in weight and possibly skinny-sow syndrome.
Creep feeding helps to reduce post weaning scouring in piglets, give them higher weaning weight and give them a better start at life.
However, creep feeding must be done correctly to avoid wastage and reap attendant benefits and it is supplemental to the sow's milk and shouldn't be seen as a replacement for lactation.
