Preparing for NDI on Your Network?

NDI bandwidth consumption is such that NDI video streams can be delivered across the network at a ratio of approximately 15:1 relative to uncompressed video of the same format.

NDI operates most efficiently in a dedicated network with high bandwidth and high availability. This is in contrast to unmanaged environments such as the public Internet or networks where video rides along with data without priority. While a single stream of HD video can possibly be delivered on a Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) network, Gigabit (1000 Mbps) networks are essential in production workflows. A typical NDI stream consisting of 1080i HD video yields a data rate up to 100 Mbps per stream. This extremely efficient stream is designed to have very low latency and allows multiple streams to be stacked together on a single Gigabit network. Even so, a production environment may require more capacity based on the type and quantity of simultaneous NDI video streams in a particular workflow.

The following table is intended as a guide for calculating bandwidth needs based on video resolutions and frame rates. Bandwidth needed for NDI video streams should be based on determination of the average utilisation required.

The following table indicates the expected bandwidth load per NDI video stream for common delivery formats. Each reference stream includes 16 channels of audio.

1 x stream of SD video = 20 Mbps
1 x stream of 720p50/59.94 video = 90Mbps
1 x stream of 1080i50/59.94 video = 100Mbps
1 x stream of 1080p50/59.94 video = 125Mbps
1 x stream of UHDp30 video = 200Mbps
1 x stream of UHDp60 video = 250Mbps

NDI traffic should not consume more than 75% of the bandwidth of any network link.

NDI (Network Device Interface) is a new technology in the a/v transmission market that has revolutionised how audio and video are transmitted in a production environment.

NDI is a new technology pioneered by NewTek that takes an audio and video source, like a camera, and sends it over your local area network (LAN) as a broadcast. Any device or software on the same LAN that can receive an NDI feed can pick up the feed from another NDI device and rebroadcast it or it can mix it with other content and rebroadcast.

Gone are the days of running SDI cables from every video source to a hardware video mixer. The idea of having multiple video and audio sources mixed together has become much simpler with NDI.

NDI is the new thing and it’s awesome, but do you need it?
