If you received a prompt on WhatsApp asking if someone has made a purchase, it is highly likely a scam or phishing attempt. WhatsApp itself does not send in-app messages, alerts, or pop-ups asking about your personal purchases, bank details, or transactions.
Scammers frequently use these tactics with the following goals:
1. Fake Bank Alerts: Impersonating your bank (like First Bank, Zenith, or GTBank in Nigeria) to make you panic and click a malicious link to "verify" or "cancel" a purchase.
2. Impersonation/Refund Scams:* Pretending to be an online seller, delivery service, or marketplace platform claiming a buyer sent money or made a fake purchase.
How to Stay Safe
1. Do not click links: Never tap on suspicious links from unknown numbers claiming you owe money or that a purchase is being investigated.
2. Do not share personal information: Legitimate services will never ask for your passwords, card PINs, or One-Time Passwords (OTPs) over WhatsApp.
3. Block and Report: Immediately block the number and use the built-in Report button in the chat menu.
4. Verify directly: If you are actually worried about a transaction, log into your banking app or reach out directly to the customer support of the service they claim to represent.
