EDITORIAL: TSU’s Rising Sporting Prestige: A New Dawn at NUGA 2025

By Stephen Victor Gana

The just-concluded 27th Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games, hosted by the University of Jos in November 2025, will be remembered as a defining moment in the sporting history of Taraba State University, Jalingo. Emerging 16th on the national medals table, with an impressive haul of ten medals four gold, three silver and three bronze the institution has once again affirmed its ascent as a formidable sporting powerhouse in the Nigerian university encouragement.

This achievement is far more than a statistical rise; it is a pointer to vision, discipline and institutional transformation. Under the purposeful and forward-thinking leadership of the Digital Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunday Paul Bako for whom Taraba State University, Jalingo has steadily repositioned its sports architecture. The 16th-place finish at NUGA 2025 is therefore not an isolated occurrence but the latest proof of a broader, well-coordinated strategy aimed at nurturing excellence and competitiveness in diverse sporting disciplines. You may recall that the VC hosted the Pre-NUGA games in Jalingo, the state capital before preceding to Jos.

The NUGA Games, widely regarded as the premier platform for identifying and celebrating Nigeria’s best student-athletes, demands not only talent but endurance, preparation and character. TSU’s athletes demonstrated all three. Their performance in Jos reflects a level of commitment that speaks volumes about their discipline and the solid support systems now embedded within the university. Sports director, coaches and the entire TSU sports management team worked tirelessly to ensure that each athlete stepped onto the field fully prepared and mentally primed for victory.

More importantly, this success carries implications that extend beyond sports. In an era where universities are increasingly judged by the well-roundedness of their graduates, excellence in athletics has become a key marker of institutional strength. TSU’s consistent strides in NUGA competitions place the university among institutions that prioritise holistic development, an environment where academic brilliance meets physical vigour, teamwork and global competitiveness.

The 2025 Games also brought renewed attention to TSU as a Centre of Excellence not merely in academics but in talent cultivation. Each medal symbolises a story of resilience: early-morning trainings, discipline in balancing academics with sport and the courage to compete on a national stage. For a university located far from the traditional sporting hubs of Nigeria, these victories resonate even more deeply. They reveal a future in which Taraba State University may yet dominate the NUGA stage, inspiring a generation of youths from the Northeast and beyond.

As the university community celebrates this milestone, it is equally important to recognise the broader benefits this achievement brings. Sporting success fosters unity, strengthens institutional identity and enhances visibility across Nigeria. It attracts potential sponsors, invites partnerships and positions TSU as a preferred destination for talented young athletes seeking both academic growth and sporting advancement.

The 27th NUGA Games have concluded but their legacy for TSU is only beginning. With deliberate investment, sustained leadership and steady student dedication, Taraba State University stands on the threshold of even greater accomplishments. The momentum must not be lost. Instead, it should inspire renewed commitment to developing sports infrastructure, expanding training programmes and strengthening policies that support student-athletes.

Congratulations to the Vice-Chancellor, his management team, the sports unit, the coaching crew, all staff members, the fansbase and most especially the triumphant athletes whose efforts have carried the university to this historic moment. Their success is a proud reminder that with vision, teamwork and resilience, TSU’s place among Nigeria’s leading universities academically and athletically is not only assured but continually expanding.

Taraba State University has risen and the nation has taken notice. The NUGA 2025 Games have written a new chapter of excellence for TSUJ, one that promises even greater victories in the years to come especially with the ongoing refurnishing of the entire sports complex and the recently construction of a gigantic, well equipped gymnasium in the University by the VC.
