Department of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution in Collaboration with Bureau for Peace Management Hosts Maiden National Conference in Taraba State University, Jalingo
The Department of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Taraba State University, in collaboration with the Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management, Taraba State, hosts the Maiden National Conference with the theme "Violent Conflicts and Peace Building in Taraba State, Northeast Nigeria". The conference is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, 9th to Thursday, 11th December 2025, at the ASUU Secretariat Taraba State, Jalingo.
The aim of the National Conference is to generate policy-relevant knowledge, facilitate research and practice collaboration, and promote local ownership of peace and development processes. The conference serves as a platform for critical dialogue on the dynamics and complex patterns of violent conflict and possibilities of sustainable peace in Taraba State. The Conference brought together researchers, scholars, practitioners, NGOs, CSOs, community leaders and stakeholders, head of security agencies security experts, religious leaders and students for cross-fertilisation of ideas on Peace building in Taraba State.
The Chairman of the Conference Organising Committee, Dr Buhari Shehu, in his opening speech, welcomed the participants to Taraba State University, Jalingo. He stated the aim of the conference as mainly to dissect the nature and dynamics of violent conflicts in Taraba State and to navigate the ways to lasting peace for the sustainable development of the state.
In his welcoming speech, the Head of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution, Dr Jev Amos Asongo, expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor of Taraba State University, Prof Sunday Paul Bako, for his gracious approval and provision of resources for hosting the conference. He stated that the conference seeks to contribute to national development by interrogating conflict dynamics and violence in Taraba State and the Northeast in general.
Similarly, the co-host Chairman of the Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management, Bishop Innocent Solomon, applauded the collaboration as timely and useful for social change through peace science He explained that Taraba is naturally endowed but yet engulfed in various conflict dynamics over the years, which has created underdevelopment. He commended Dr Agbu Kefas, the Governor of Taraba State, for drastically reducing insecurity.
The Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr Danjuma Yusuf, in his remarks, commended the initiative of hosting a national conference by the Department of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution as timely and important. He further described the gathering of scholars and practitioners as a harvesting ground for ideas that would inform public policy.
The CAN Chairman of Taraba State, Rev. Fr. Dr Williams Awoshiri expressed optimism on the outcome of the conference on promoting peaceful coexistence in Taraba State. He reiterated that God loves peace makers in every society and generation.
The Chief Host Vice-Chancellor, Taraba State University, Prof. Sunday Paul Bako, ably represented by DVC Administration, Prof Reuben Jonathan, commended the initiative of hosting the national conference by the Department of Peace Studies and Conflict in collaboration with the Bureau for Peace and Conflict Management, Taraba State. The University Management encourages collaboration and partnership as a very important component in the contribution to national development through knowledge production, research, and conferences.
The Commandant 6 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Jalingo, Taraba State Brig. Gen. K.C. Uwa delivered the Keynote speech, highlighting the nature and patterns of conflicts in Taraba State. He calls on the citizens to cooperate and support the activities of security agencies in dealing with security problems across the state.
The lead paper of the National Conference was presented by Dr. John Tor Tsuwa, the Deputy Director Centre for Peace and Development Studies, Benue State University. His paper titled "Violent Conflict and Challenge of Peace Building In Taraba State, Nigeria" provided the ecology of conflict in Taraba State, conflict mapping, conflict actors, emerging conflicts, and manifestations. The paper suggested community engagement and a homegrown approach to conflict resolution in Taraba State and beyond.
During the programme, some notable individuals who have contributed to peace, community dialogue, and sustainable peacebuilding in Taraba State were recognised and given awards. The awardees were Distinguished Senator Harauna Manu, Taraba Central Senatorial District, Hon. A. M. Lauya, MHR, representing Ardo-Kola/Karim Lamido/Lau Federal Constituency Taraba State, His Lordship Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah (The Kukah Centre), and Hon. Veronica Alhassan, Member, House of Assembly, Bali 1, Taraba State.
