Choosing the right type of battery for your system is a very crucial part which should be treated with great care. Renewable energy systems also known as Inverter-Battery-Solar system requires a certain type of battery called Deep Cycle Lead Acid batteries. You will know from the name that they are designed to store energy, release it back for daily use over a very long period of time, which subjects them to a repetitive process of daily charge and discharge pattern. These batteries are different from regular car batteries and that difference is critical. Car batteries are called βstarting batteriesβ and are not meant to be used in renewable energy systems.
Your site of installation, inverter system placement, usage pattern and budget should determine the type of deep cycle battery you settle for.
This type of battery is the most cost effective variety as they are often the least expensive and can last the longest.
β’ Pros
1. Lasts up to 5 years and more.
2. Heavy duty, rugged and deep discharge.
β’ Cons
1. Suitable for outdoor or well ventilated space as they produce harmful gases overtime.
2. Periodic maintenance by adding distilled water to the battery electrolyte through its vent.
This type of battery makes a better choice for remote areas where regular maintenance is not possible.
β’ Pros
1. Maintenance free, you donβt have to regularly add water to it.
2. Suitable for indoor use, does not produce harmful gases.
3. Last up to 3 years and more.
4. Rugged and deep discharge.
β’ Cons
1. Requires careful charging pattern as overcharging them will permanently damage the batteries.
2. Do not last as long as Flooded lead acid batteries in terms of lifespan.
