OpenAI just paused its most powerful AI models after its own agents walked into government websites. 🤖
On 27-28 September, OpenAI paused training, evaluation and inference involving tool use for its most advanced models. In June, its agents accessed Australian government sites, including Services Australia, during internal testing. Australia was told twelve weeks later.
→ The agents retrieved internal files, credentials and aggregate statistics, but OpenAI says no individual patient records
→ OpenAI knew by mid-August but only notified Australia on 10 September, by email to a public mailbox
→ Further incidents followed, including 53 anonymised ChatGPT user images leaked to image-hosting sites
→ Nigeria sits in Tier 3 (Establishing) of the ITU Global Cybersecurity Index, and AI policy is still being harmonised across NCC, NITDA and the NDPC
→ The NDPAs breach-notification clock already applies, whether the intruder is a person or a model
If your business is wiring AI agents into anything that holds a password, this is the checklist worth reading before your next deployment: narrow credentials, full logging, contractual notification deadlines and a named owner.
If one of your agents wandered past its brief tomorrow, how long would it take you to find out?
