As part of my learning journey at Dev and Design, my team ( group 9) was asked to replicate a screen from any popular app.

The goal was to understand spacing, typography, alignment, and colour balance in real-world app design.

I chose WhatsApp, a free messaging app that allows people to send text messages, voice notes, photos, videos, and documents, and make calls all over the Internet.

Since it was an app I used daily, replicating its screen felt familiar and exciting.

I decided to work on the home screen, so I took a snapshot of it, used Figma to recreate the screen, focusing on details like icons, chat layout, and the status bar.

The challenge was to match WhatsAppโ€™s clean, minimal look while keeping the structure consistent.

This task helped me improve my eye for alignment and spacing. I realized how small details like padding and typography affect usability and readability.

For me, it wasn't just about copying visuals but understanding why each design choice was made.

Iโ€™d love to hear your thoughts. What other app interface do you think I should replicate next? ๐Ÿ‘‡

Have you ever said โ€œbananaโ€ when asked to name a fruit just because you saw something yellow a few minutes earlier?

I know I have.

What happened is called priming. A psychological principle where exposure to one stimulus influences how you respond to the next.

And just like in everyday life, priming also shapes how users experience your designs.

Here's what I mean:

โ€ข Using green for success messages primes users to feel secure that their payment went through.

โ€ข Phrases like โ€œBuy nowโ€ or โ€œLimited slots availableโ€ prime a sense of urgency.

โ€ข A sign-up button that says โ€œJoin the communityโ€ instead of โ€œCreate an accountโ€ primes users to feel like theyโ€™re becoming part of something bigger.

So, next time youโ€™re designing, remember to apply priming.

Have you ever primed your users? Share your experience below

The other day, I was scrolling through my phone, feeling a little bored when I came across the OPAY app.

Then it hit me โ€” why not try replicating the dashboard?

As designers, one of the best ways to grow is by practising through replication. So I gave it a shot.

I took a screenshot, moved it to my PC, and started working.

At some point, I couldnโ€™t find some of the original icons. For a moment, I thought of quittingโ€ฆ but instead, I improvised and designed the icons from scratch.

Was it hard? Absolutely.
Did I get the result I wanted? Yes.

Hereโ€™s what the process taught me:

* If you donโ€™t quit, you reap the benefits.
* Pushing yourself unlocks new ideas.
* When you canโ€™t find a solution, improvise.

Iโ€™d love your thoughts โ€” how would you rate my replication, and what could I improve?

Let me be real, one conversion killer I see in UX is when designers complicate user experiences

What do I mean:

โ€ข Requesting unnecessary information during
onboarding process, e.g, date of birth, phone number

โ€ข Adding a login screen during checkout

โ€ข Forcing users to sign up before browsing a product.

Does this kill conversion? Absolutely, yes

Here's why

โ€ข Every extra step or piece of information causes cognitive load on the user.

โ€ข Users have a mental model for every task. Adding a login screen during checkout will cause confusion among users = drop-offs

โ€ข Most users want to see what you offer before committing. Forcing them will automatically kill their interests

How to fix it

โ€ข Keep the onboarding process clear and direct

โ€ข Allow for guest browsing

โ€ข Shorten checkout flows

A simple tweak might be what a product needs to boost conversions

What's one tweak you've made that boosted conversions? I would love to hear your though

Have you ever clicked a link to learn about a product but left unsure what it offered? Thatโ€™s usually a poorly designed hero section.

Zendesk AIโ€™s landing page has this issue.

Users often drop off when the hero section doesnโ€™t explain the product clearly.

Before we dive into the redesign,

let's clarify this:

The hero section is simply the first thing you see on a page, and a landing page itself is built to drive one clear action โ€” like signing up or buying.

Hereโ€™s what I noticed about Zendesk AIโ€™s page that may be causing drop-offs:

โ€ข ๐˜”๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ ๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฌ๐˜ด: causes confusion, the user may end up clicking the wrong one
โ€ข ๐˜œ๐˜ฏ๐˜ค๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ: users don't know what they are signing up for
โ€ข ๐˜“๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฌ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ข๐˜ญ:: Users don't trust the product

What I did differently:

โ€ข ๐˜™๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฌ๐˜ด: we want users to take just one action โ€” signing up for the product
โ€ข ๐˜Š๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ณ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ: users know what the product does and how it can help them
โ€ข ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ถ๐˜ข๐˜ญ: helps users connect and build trust.
โ€ข ๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ: placed at the bottom with a scrolling effect so the numbers stand out and build trust

Working on this project reminded me of how first impressions matter.

A hero section can decide whether a user bounces or converts.

Iโ€™d love to hear your thoughts โ€” would my redesign keep you on the page?

Ps: the first image is the original amd the second is my redesign

The login screen is the first point of contact with users. If it feels off, people drop off before even trying the app.

Hereโ€™s what I noticed on Ogbeleโ€™s screen:

โ€ข โ€œ๐‘ฎ๐’Š๐’—๐’† ๐’Ž๐’† ๐’š๐’๐’–๐’“ ๐’๐’๐’ˆ๐’Š๐’ ๐’…๐’†๐’•๐’‚๐’Š๐’๐’”โ€” unfriendly header - feels like begging.

โ€ข ๐‘ต๐’ ๐’”๐’Š๐’ˆ๐’-๐’–๐’‘ ๐’‘๐’‚๐’•๐’‰ โ€” first timers had nowhere to go.

๐Ÿ”„ My redesign:

* โœ… Warm, welcoming header + icon.
* โœ… Multiple login options for flexibility.
* โœ… Clear sign-up option for new users.

Small fixes on first-touch screens make a big difference in trust, inclusivity, and user retention

Consistency isnโ€™t something most people talk about, but itโ€™s a crucial part of growth. And it takes real discipline.

Here's what I mean

There are days when you wonโ€™t feel motivated.
Other days youโ€™ll just want to stay in bed.
And sometimes, everything will feel overwhelming.

But hereโ€™s the truth
Life keeps moving whether you feel ready or not.

The people who stay consistent in work, in
Habits, in anything, are the ones that reap the rewards.

Thatโ€™s why, even when youโ€™re tired, unmotivated, or overwhelmed, you need to be consistent

Show up always

Tick that list. Fulfill that goal.

Iโ€™m rooting for you.

Yes โ€” but only if itโ€™s designed right.

The login screen is the point of contact between the user and a product (website or app). It provides the first experience to a user about your product.

A login screen with friction will cause drop-offs, while a login screen that is smooth and user-friendly will not only increase user retention but also build trust and loyalty.

So, designing a user-friendly login screen is paramount.

Here are some UX best practices for designing a login screen

1. Keep it fast & simple (email + password, or phone OTP).

2. Add social sign-in options (Google, Apple, Facebook).

3. Use features like"Remember me, FaceID, or Keep me signed in" for returning users.

4. Include a "forget password" feature for easy password recovery.

5. Offer a "guest mode" feature for users to explore before committing

A well-designed login screen will go a long way in improving user retention, building trust, and creating loyalty.

Do you have other additional practices? Let's hear them in the comments.
