We want to brag about our client a bit.

Hoop for Hope is a non-profit organisation assisting young Africans in building their dreams through charity funding with the game of basketball. We (Gedoua) did their brand identity in 2023, helping them intentionally curate their tone, voice, visuals, and identity/recognition system, and their journey so far has been wow!

They've hosted over 4 basketball tournament editions (‘Every Basket Count’, Run Rapid Classics) with over 50 teams competing across both editions for charity and fundraising across Eastern Nigeria.

That little community has grown into 4,000+ persons following and supporting the vision of the brand.

They've met more persons along the way, players, coaches, creators, brands, amazing people (Court Chronicles, Eziafia, Fifty1Hoops, and many more) and moments that brought the Eastern basketball community together, which became part of their story, including us.

And they've continued to visit motherless babies' homes and orphanages while donating to them.

From a 3-on-3 charity event to four basketball tournaments, 2 basketball tournament editions, a draft night, a one-on-one tournament, building 40-plus teams, building 4,000+ followers on social media, and a yearly charity walk, plus a fast-growing community.

And they're just getting started.

Here is the case study on the visual identity system we built.

How do you create a visual recognition system for alphabets that look like trees? Exercises that connect brainwork to the physical world through the human hand? Fun writing expressions that dissipate creative block?

As the name directly/indirectly suggests, D'scribers serves as a community/home where writers can be authentic, have fun expressing their craft, while being thought leaders and spearheads of messages to be shared with the world.

We connected the stakeholders' essence to the D'scribers identity through a handwritten wordmark, fine-tuned digitally to represent the community while assisting the seamless perpetuation of the brand's architecture [book club, digital/physical archive called Bookshelf, a hut, a scroll, etc.].

We assisted with:
• Brand naming
• Clarification of brand culture & structure
• The brand's visual identity system

A few natural recognition traits (who they naturally are) were employed and amplified to further reinforce this identity system for D'scribers:
• Scribbling
• Customised alphabets (tree look-alikes)
• A typewriter brand typeface
• Customised paper backgrounds, etc.

These are some of the characteristics and traits that make the D'scribers community a home for the African writer (and others across the globe).

We preach our mantra: In 'Being,' true authenticity (of a person, brand or idea) is amplified. Not in 'trying' to be someone or something else.

Be.

For decades, many businesses have believed that becoming global requires becoming less of themselves.

Less local. Less cultural. Less indigenous. Less unique.

So companies adopted foreign-sounding names, imported visual languages, borrowed corporate philosophies, and pursued an idea of professionalism that often looked remarkably similar across continents.

Yet history tells a different story. The brands that have stood the test of time did not become global by abandoning who they were. They became global by becoming more deeply themselves.

• Japan gave the world precision through brands like Toyota Motor Corporation and Sony.
• Scandinavia exported simplicity through brands such as IKEA and the LEGO Group.
• Switzerland became synonymous with quality through brands like ROLEX and Nestlé.
• Italy became a symbol of craftsmanship through brands such as Ferrari and Gucci.
• South Korea transformed its cultural discipline into global influence through brands like Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Motor Company.

The world rarely remembers what is generic. It remembers what is distinct. These identities became assets.

This principle extends beyond businesses.

People are most impactful when they embrace authenticity (their uniqueness). Ideas become powerful when they offer a perspective the world has not seen before. Communities become influential when they contribute their own voice to humanity's conversation.

The same is true for brands. The strongest brands do not merely exist.

They "be."

They possess a clear sense of identity, values, worldview, character, and purpose. They understand that branding is not simply about how an organization looks. It is about how an organisation thinks and ‘why’ they exist.

Perhaps this raises an important question for Africans.

What happens when African brands stop asking, "How do we look global?" and begin asking, "How do we contribute our unique perspective to the world?"

What happens when we stop borrowing distinction and start expressing it?

What happens when our businesses begin exporting African philosophies, African systems of meaning, African creativity, African ways of building community, African approaches to problem-solving, and African interpretations of value?

Not as decoration, nor as trends. But as a solid strategy.

Africa possesses some of the richest cultural, intellectual, artistic, and philosophical resources on Earth.

Our opportunity is not to imitate what already exists. Our opportunity is to contribute something the world does not yet have. The future belongs to brands confident enough to be themselves.

And perhaps the next generation of globally respected African brands will not be those that look the most foreign. Perhaps they will be those courageous enough to look, think, sound, and behave unmistakably African.

The world does not need another copy. It is waiting for an original.

Be.

Rather than forcing reinvention, we refined and evolved the existing symbol (a double greater-than mark) simplifying and strengthening its meaning to better communicate Boundless’ core mission: endless possibilities and no boundaries.

The refined identity system reinforces Boundless’ long-term vision of becoming the world’s leading decentralized funding ecosystem by 2030, serving millions globally and distributing transparent, on-chain capital so that anyone, anywhere, can build the future.

Every stage of the system was intentionally designed to balance technical credibility with human optimism. The optics needed to feel credible enough for infrastructure while remaining warm enough for a global community.

The resulting identity positions Boundless as builder-centric, transparent, empowering, and practical while avoiding the coldness often associated with financial and blockchain systems.

At its rudimental existence, Boundless exists to ensure that great ideas are funded for their merit, not their network.

For us, this project became another reminder that strong identity systems do not emerge from imitation or forced differentiation. They emerge when brands fully embody their uniqueness and communicate it with clarity, intentionality, and consistency.

We help foresight organizations become culturally recognizable, commercially trusted, and emotionally unforgettable.

Human beings are social entities. Very good at sensing subtle details in behavior and are good (or terrible) at judging accuracy accordingly.

Humans get good and bad feelings about corporate bodies (businesses) the same way we get these feelings about fellow humans [it is an innate gift].

There are some businesses we just feel we can trust visually and others we feel we can't.

The intentionality behind a business, idea, person, animal (rudimentarily, the nouns), image/brand (optical perception) says a lot about who they are, what they stand for, and who aligns with them (their target audience, shareholders, employees & brand advocates).

Standing on business, we had the initiative of rebranding the Boundless brand to tell a sophisticated symbolism (we initiated an identity system with a spearhead looking, forward-facing ‘B’ logomark) but found ourselves sticking to our (Gedoua) mantra; ‘Amplify your authenticity (uniqueness).’

We (at Gedoua & Team Boundless) further refined the previous logomark (the two-faced parallel greater-than symbol), simplifying the brand’s why to best tell its mission — endless possibilities and no boundaries (as the name ‘Boundless’ implies).

This reinforces Boundless’ mission that, by 2030, they would become the world’s leading decentralized funding ecosystem (serving millions globally and distributing billions in transparent, on-chain capital) so that anyone, anywhere, can build the future.

African businesses deserve identity systems nurtured from cultural intelligence and intentionality, not imitation. Strong identities reduce friction, inspire customer’s confidence, and increase perceived authority.

Our duty?
Assist visionary organizations become culturally recognizable, commercially trusted, and emotionally unforgettable.

Corporations, businesses, and entities spend a good deal of capital to show their shareholders, customers, and banks how good they are.

So, they hire designers or agencies like ourselves to intentionally curate their public perception, brand, and touchpoints like brochures, ads, posters, booklets, cards, annual reports, social media platforms, websites, and many more to look as excellent as they want to appear.

It is much sweeter when the brand truly aligns with these entities, further reinforcing their being, and much more excellent when there is no force to make the brand look different from its competitors because they embody their uniqueness, which is what makes them, them.

This sets them apart from their competitors by amplifying their true nature.

We did the same for the Boundless brand, simplifying the voice, tone, and perception while tailoring it to its authentic self, so much so that an ardent, innovative 10-year-old can consume and align with this message seamlessly.

Asides from the brand mark being a double greater-than symbol signifying endless possibilities and no boundaries (as the name ‘Boundless’ implies), Boundless aims that by 2030, they would become the world’s leading decentralized funding ecosystem (serving millions globally and distributing billions in transparent, on-chain capital) so that anyone, anywhere, can build the future.

Boundless is an all-in-one decentralized funding (DeFi) ecosystem built on the Stellar blockchain. It removes traditional barriers to funding by enabling milestone-based escrow, transparent on-chain payments, and near-zero transaction costs.

The platform brings together hackathons, bounties, grants, and crowdfunding into a single environment because innovation should not stall due to geography, gatekeeping, or expensive intermediaries.

At its rudimental existence, Boundless exists to ensure that great ideas are funded for their merit, not their network.

We were privileged to implement a recognition system that communicates trust, transparency, and fairness while amplifying a global, inclusive, and borderless feel that balances technical credibility with accessibility, reflecting speed, efficiency, and innovation.

This positions Boundless as builder-centric, empowering, and practical, which avoids corporate coldness and instead signals human optimism powered by technology.

In total essence, the team at Gedoua drove towards Boundless optics being credible enough for infrastructure and warm enough for a global community.

After the creation/curation of a successful product, a manual is paramount. Why?

To enable its users to easily flow with its purpose and harness its functionality seamlessly.

Oh well! The same applies to an identity (brand/visual identity). After the successful creation/curation/implementation of an identity system, a couple of documents (style guide, brand guideline, etc.) are vital to the ease of ex*****on for the team or body implementing the identity system.

This serves as a roadmap to ensure all systems are put in place the right way, ensuring its (identity system) function is achieved without hitch.

Here is a sneak peek of “the couple of documents” curated for The Marriage Architect (TMA).
