Common Computer Problems and Their Solutions
In this world of globalization you may think that computer owners rarely have problems with their computers. However, the truth is that there are very common computer problems that most computer owners face, and here is a look at a few of them.
1. Slow performance
Sometimes, the computer does not respond to commands as quickly as it should or it takes a long time to execute a simple command. This could be caused by several causes. It could be anti-virus or anti-malware software, or it could be accumulation of useless files. The computer may also be running several programs at the same time. There could be little hard disk space or the RAM may not be enough for the applications that are running in the computer.
Remedy: You can delete old and useless files if the problem is due to hard disk and RAM space issues. Do not run several programs simultaneously and install a suitable anti-virus software for your operating system and computer specifications. You can also do the following:
• Empty your recycle bin by right-clicking on the Recycle Bin icon (usually on the desktop) and choosing the “Empty Recycle Bin” option.
• Check your mail files. Remove any large attachments and delete unused mail. Images and videos take up a lot of space, so consider moving those to an external drive.
• Remove temporary files from your internet browser
• Perform a disk cleanup
2. The blue screen of death
This is a very common computer problem especially to those who install buggy or sketchy software on their computers. There are various types of error messages displayed on the blue screen depending on the cause of the problem. For instance, you can see a message like “Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer”. This problem is caused by installation of incompatible drivers, overheating, the system running out of memory as well as hardware and software failure.
Remedy: If you suspect that you installed incompatible drivers or your operating system is buggy, just uninstall the software and install the right one. Alternatively, you can check for software updates and install them where necessary. With the other causes, you can undo the recent changes to the computer using the system restore feature, use the safe mode to troubleshoot the problems or check for the status of your hard disk.
3. Viruses
A virus is a malicious computer program that is designed to interfere with the operation of a computer program or destroy computer programs. They occur in various forms and they normally attack computers from various sources such as infected external memory modules, fake software, or the internet.
Remedy: Installing anti-virus software is the best way to eliminate malware and other forms of malicious computer software. However, it is important to ensure that you install an antivirus software that is compatible with your operating system and computer specifications. It is also important to routinely check for software updates. It is worth noting that the best remedy for this problem would be to avoid using infected secondary storage devices with your computer and avoid visiting websites that are likely to have viruses. This is so because sometimes, the anti-virus software may degrade the performance of the computer, adding insult to injury.
4. The computer does not start
Sometimes, pressing the power button will not make the computer start. This can be as a result of simple problems like loose or improper connection to serious problems such as power supply failure.
Remedy: Check all connections and ensure that they are tight. Ensure that every hardware component is in the right place. If the problem is not solved, the power supply could be faulty.
5. Strange noise
The computer may start off and boot as expected, but make whirring noises while in use. This could be an indication of overheating or may be a sign that a lot of dust has accumulated in the computer and clogged the fan.
Remedy: You can remove the dust from the computer by using a keyboard cleaner or replace the fan if it is faulty.
6. The computer is frozen
If a program is not responding, this means that the computer is frozen.
Remedy: press the Ctrl, Alt, and Delete keys simultaneously to start the task manager. End programs you think could be causing an issue by selecting it and clicking on the “End Task” button. You can also perform a hard body reboot by turning the computer off manually as a last resort. Run a virus check when the computer goes back to its normal working condition.
7. The printer, mouse, or keyboard are not working properly
If the printer is not working properly, it could mean that either its connections are loose, its drivers are outdated, or it is faulty. Similarly, if the mouse or the keyboard is not working properly, it is very likely that connections have not been made correctly or the hardware components have failed.
Remedy: Check for flashing lights on the printer. They indicate that there is a problem with the printer itself such as paper jam. Ensure that the connection between the printer and the computer is okay. Check if the printer drivers are installed properly or if they are updated.
Check if the mouse is securely plugged into the computer if it is not working properly. If not, plug it in completely. Check to see whether or not the cord has been damaged. If it is damaged, the mouse may need replacing. If you are using a cordless mouse, try pushing the connection button on the underside of the mouse to reestablish a connection. Clean the mouse, especially on the bottom.
With the key board, make sure that it is connected to the computer properly. If not, securely plug it into the computer. If you are using a wireless keyboard, try changing the batteries. If one of the keys on your keyboard gets stuck, turn the computer off and clean with a damp cloth. Use the mouse to restart the computer in this case.
8. Windows Media Player does not have sound, or the speakers do not have sound
Sometimes, the media player of the computer may not produce any sound. In many cases, the media player might work but sound may not be coming out of the computer speakers.
Remedy: check the connections of the speakers to the computer. Ensure that the volume is not muted.
