Sitting at a corner in this cozy restaurant, enjoying my semo and vegetable soup, I couldn’t be notice an event that happened in a flash. A young lady and her boyfriend were talking rudely to the waitress who had earlier attended to me very calmly.

Here is the back story, the beautiful young lady who was a waiter at this restaurant have been doing her work very beautifully before this other lady came in. The other lady, who seem to be age mates with the waiter, looked like she was a “runs girl” and all bills was on the guy who also didn’t seem to be earning his money legitimately.

The boyfriend stepped out to pick something that seemed like an urgent call but the lady was distracted on her phone and didn’t hear the waiter tell her the food was ready. The boyfriend came back and asked why she wasn’t eating. Rather than admitting to being distracted the lady turned it on the waiter.

The waiter was quite but I could see how pained she was in her eyes. I could imagine what she would be thinking. I think the waiter is 4x more beautiful than the girl and spoke better English so she really stood a better chance. I know she would have imagined if she was also a runs girl and not trying to do legitimate work, she would make a better runs girl. I felt quite bad knowing that sure occurrence wasn’t the first for her and may not be the last.

When people say they are going through “a lot”, experiences like these are a part of the package for some people but I am happy to tell you that you can change that story. No matter what your experience has been before now, you can turn things around.

The lie we tell ourselves is that we don’t have options, and that boxes us into only one paradigm. You have options, several!!! Don’t be limited by your background or defined by your past. You can change your story from today. One way I know is through tech. I believe there is something for everyone in tech and it is really a very broad one, unlimited opportunities!!! If you are worried about how to get started, join our webinar on Friday or register for our free introductory course which starts in few weeks. You will find the links in the comment.

I wish you the best.

Since we launched the first cohort of our skills empowerment training at Skillup Africa in 2020 we have always selected less than 2% of all those who apply. That is 2 out of every 100 applications we received. Initially, we were proud to add it to our metrics but as we proceed, it began to break my heart that for every 2 people we select, there are 98 people not selected. 98 people who also want to learn but because of their inability to scale our screening or our limited capacity we can not support them.

My team and I thought about what could be a solution for a very long time and I am happy to inform you that we have a solution at hand. However, this also serves another group of people who really want to get into tech but need foundational knowledge. Another experience we have had is that of people who come with absolutely no knowledge at all so when they get in, the pace of our training gets a bit choking at the beginning. People need to learn and understand the basics before going deeper. You can't feed a baby meat in their first month.

I present to you Skillup Africa Kickstart. Our Kickstart courses are short (4 weeks), introductory but well-detailed courses for absolute beginners, who want to get started with learning a particular tech skill. The best part is that the courses are absolutely free and require as little as 2 hours of live sessions and as much time as you can spare weekly. You also get a certificate at the end of the training with post-training support that will help you scale up your learning after Kickstart.

Are you trying to get into tech? Wait no more, the opportunity you need is here. Register and share with friends and family, there are no limits to who can learn with Kickstart. Are you a tech professional and will lick to teach a kickstart course? please reach out to us and we will make it happen. That's it, see you on the other side (Link in the comment section).

You might have been hearing people say things like "Tech is the future", "Coding is life", “If you don't get into crypto now you have missed out for life" and you are worried. Fear of missing out (FOMO) is making you feel you need to do something fast. My first advice to you is to take a pause, don't be pressured into taking a decision without properly weighing your options. Not every aspect of Tech is for everyone but definitely, there is something for everyone.

In my over 10 years of helping people get into Tech, almost every single time, only those who are intentional have been able to make something worthwhile off their venturing into tech. There will always be something that will be the buzz of the moment, at one time it was bulk SMS, at another time it was eCommerce, and currently, it seems to be fintech. The story is the same for programming languages and frameworks and when you think about different aspects of tech - digital marketing, data analytics, programming, customizing websites with CMSs (WordPress and all)- nothing is different.

You just really need to seek knowledge and be intentional in your approach. If I got a dollar for every time someone asked me for the aspect of tech that is "paying the most" so they can go into it, I would be a millionaire. There is no aspect of tech that doesn't pay, you just need to get the right information and pursue it. Before you take any step, learn first.

One of such meetings you shouldn't miss if you are in that position is the webinar Skillup Africa will be cohosting with The Fifth Alley. Come and learn how you can transition into Tech even without a background in Tech. Come and learn about the different opportunities and potential in Tech beyond all the buzz. This is absolutely a meeting you will not want to miss.

While growing up in my parents' house, you were only permitted to have only one type of hair cut "Skin". I mean, last skin, the type where the barber uses the edge of the clipper to scrap your skull.

While other kids had several other hairstyles each time, we had to stick to just one. One particular time, the barber decided to "leave a bit in front" for us and he regretted it because my mum went back with us to the salon and ensured he scrapped off the whole hair.

As extreme as you may think such is, those were some of the rules that actually shaped me into who I am today. My parents were very particular about, what we wore, and ate, the kind of friends we had, and the places we went to. I thought it was wickedness but grew up to later appreciate most of those restrictions. I was such a very troublesome boy growing up. If I didn't have a mother as though as my mum, I definitely will not be here today. I said this jokingly to some of my staff members yesterday and later gave more thought to it. It's absolutely true.

Like, at some point in secondary school, I stopped attending classes and started rolling with them "boiz". I went from second in class to being promoted on trial. Took more alignment (read this as DISCIPLINE in caps) from my parents to realign me.

I really wish parents now are more responsible for their wards. The quality of parents we have today and by extension, the quality of the youths we are breeding is quite worrisome. We need to first go back to fixing ourselves from the unit of the community - family before we are able to fix our society. No politician can perform any magic. We all need to act.

BTW, it seems like my barber needs a raise, abi how you see am?

People around me know that if you need to get the best of my attention, just include Skillup Africa in anything you want to discuss with me and you have me and the reason is not far fetched.

The evidences and testimonials of those whose lives get impacted by the program fuels our drive and keeps us doing more. Year after year, people leave their homes, jobs, families and all to come to the Skillup Africa hub, what a sacrifice!!!

In this cohort we even have people who came from outside Nigeria with the determination to turn their lives around. Another journey begins, looking at the stress and what it would take is enough to turn back and abort mission but considering the glory that follows the “suffering”, the gains truly outweighs the pain so we forge ahead.

Skillup Africa now has a new location, we are inviting everyone to partner and join us. You can pay us a visit, you can volunteer to support or mentor or advise. Let’s join hands to build something beautiful. We have tons of updates to share with you in the coming weeks, anticipate!

Admission is still in progress for Cohort 4. If you got to the final stage and you are yet to hear from us, still be hopeful, or better, just send an email to confirm your status. I will do my best to share more of this journey with you as we proceed. Wish us all the best.

I think Elon Musk buying Twitter is a good one for Twitter. Twitter seems to me like Nairaland. With a lot of potential but leaving all of its growth to the community.

Often times when a company is bought, it is a growth move more than a "cash-out". Sometimes you need people who have built capacity and interacted with the product from outside to come in and take the product to the next level. If you look at the likes of Whatsapp, Instagram etc you will agree with me that this is true.

However, I will admit that this is not always the case. If the team is innovative enough like the team on Facebook then selling may be a wrong move. However, if there hasn't been much progress like in the case of Twitter, Snapchat, or Nairaland, then a change of hands can push it back into an exponential growth phase.

Founders need to understand and be at peace with this knowledge. You had the vision and started the product but you may not always have the capacity to bring the best out of the product consistently. Know when to step down as CEO and get more experienced people to run the Startup, Know when to sell for the sake of the product, know when to "move on to bigger things" as they always say. It will all be in your favour.

In 2017, we launched a program called CodeStars to showcase people doing great in tech to kids in secondary schools as a way of giving them the right role models. At the time I was working with the Lagos State government on the CodeLagos project which was aimed at introducing a million lagosians to tech.

That opened me to a lot of schools, we were working with over 150 schools and what I saw among these kids scared me. I am not a prophet of doom but if we don’t begin to take action now, events that will unfold in the next few years will blow your minds in a bad way. Things are much worse than they seem currently.

We picked the concept from “Superstars” and created Codestars to show the kids that it doesn’t only happen in the movies, we have real stars that are worthy of emulation in our local communities. If you look at the attached flier you would see that all the “Codestars” we featured are trailblazing more than ever before. Real role models.

We all need to take responsibility, you work in or own a bar? Don’t encourage underaged who have no jobs to flex like kings. You are a nurse, don’t abort pregnancies for teenagers who are not married, you are a neighbor, friend, parents to kids wanting to go astray, don’t indulge them, you are not helping them, you are killing them. If that kid dies later, just know you had a hand in it.

The African saying “it takes a community to raise a child” seems to have waded off completely. We need to return to those days, we need not loose that part of our culture. Don’t just be triggered when next you hear a bad news as regards young people in the news, you have the opportunity to change things today if you act. If you are wondering how more you can be of help, reach out to me personally. We are working on a bigger outreach than Codestars this year and we need all the help we can get. I am sure we can use your help.

It’s our responsibility to save ours when we still can.

One of the things I am most grateful for this year is the initiation of one of the things that has been on my todo list for many years.

Building projects for over a decade working with different people locally and across the globe, I had diverse frustrations, ideas and experiences. For 10 years straight, our company built for individuals, startups, and whoever needs a software solution.

Time will fail me to highlight how the experience has been, sourcing talents, working with them, communicating with them, managing them are some of the issues that were most challenging.

We started Skillup Africa to address the issue on young Africans not having an ideal roadmap for getting into tech, we started the Product Management course to help raise more PMs on the continent and also increase sensitization for product management among development teams.

I have wanted to lead an “ideal development team” for a while and for years, I made several attempts at this until this year. We wanted to have a team of product designers, developers, product managers, testers and everyone needed in the product lifecycle. Our aim is to build products that scale globally. Having a team of well trained professionals who understand product development and build “for the love of it” was the goal.

It was difficult making this a reality but this time, I partnered with two very amazing guys who also brought in their expertise and drive. On the 16th of August 2021, Zealight Innovation Labs was launched with a 25 man team of professionals working together for excellence. It’s just 4 months but looking at what we have achieved so far, I am super positive we are on the right path.

When we say technology has the capacity to change someone’s life completely in as little as six months some people think it’s cliche or that we say so because we want to sell something but it’s our reality. I have more than 50 stories from people we have trained directly that I can share but I will start with mine.

Getting a personal computer in my third year in the university and blackberry.net (if you know you know) on an Mtn modem was all I needed to change my life. I learnt graphics design, web design, mobile apps development, digital marketing and many other skills by myself sitting up late at night after working all day to grow my “CGPA” and by the time I graduate I already had a tech company earning profit. The rest is a story for another day.

Today, I will like to share the story of Rita, one of the graduates of Skillup Africa. She worked as a front desk officer in the same building where the Skillup Africa hub is and daily saw the students go in and out of the hub. She then made a decision to join the next cohort and she did. She actually resigned even before confirming her acceptance into the academy.

Daily for six months, she toiled hard alongside other students. Starting with no prior knowledge in tech makes it more difficult but not unachievable. 6 months, hundreds of sleepless night, thousands of hours of learning later, she graduated and got an offer for a product management role with some of her colleagues. Impossible is indeed nonsense.

You can change your life completely also if you commit to it, if you are ready to pay the price, there is nothing you can’t achieve. At Skillup Africa, we have made this easier by allowing you learn without paying a tuition. You only pay back when you start working.

This is a limited time opportunity. Visit www.Skillupafrica.com.ng/register to register. Registration closes in a few days.

If you have young dependents, advise them to register. The video below is Rita’s story. Enjoy.

The last 6 months has been very intense for my team and I. We hosted the second cohort of Skillup Africa and had to work consistently everyday for 6 months to help this young brilliant minds acquire skills in tech.

One thing that gets me on every time is how someone who has no prior knowledge in tech gets into the program, work their bones out day and night to learn and eventually become knowledgeable beyond average.

Some of these young minds hardly sleep, feed, rest or play well in this six month period just to achieve a goal and it’s highly commendable. You can see the pain that drives them in their eyes. For some it’s poverty for others it’s passion. Either ways, the drive keeps them going.

I do say it every time that as a young people in a third world country, you are already at a disadvantage. You need to work extra hard to break forth. I am glad we have people who take up this challenge and excel. I will share some stories with you soon.

We have made it our life’s mission to help people who make such decisions achieve their goal. That’s the reason why after a very tedious cohort 2, we are opening applications for the third cohort.

If you are a young people hoping to hit a new tragetory in life, I will advise you join this cohort. You life can change in just 6 months just like the lives of the 51 other people we have trained. I have seen people go from wanting to kill themselves to working with multinationals and building a career with a good pay. Your story can also change.

Registration will not be open for long. Visit www.skillupafrica.com.ng/register to register. Share the link with young people around you.
