How to get on internet or Wi-fi without a router
If you have an ISP connection coming to your home, then you can establish a connection to the ISP with just a modem to support a single device - normally a PC with an Ethernet port. A router provides a number of extra features that allow multiple devices to share the Internet connection and generally simplify the process of connecting new devices once the basic network is working.
If you just have a modem, then connect a PC can connect to the modem using Ethernet. You have to configure the connection settings in the PC. In Windows 8.1, which is what I am using today, the steps are as follows:
Open Network and Sharing Center.
Look for the link to “Set up a new connection or network” and click on it.
In the set up window, look for the option to “Connect to the internet”. In 8.1 this is the first option.
Follow the steps to set up a connection through the modem.
I believe Windows 10 will follow similar steps.
If you have a cell phone with Internet capability, this will provide Internet access without a capability when you are using cellular Internet.
