Recap from the July ITHAC Community Learning Session

"What comes to your mind when you hear cybersecurity?"

That simple question opened the room during our July ITHAC Community Learning Session, and what followed was more than a presentation. It became a conversation.

As participants shared their understanding of information security, the discussion naturally evolved into the many paths within cybersecurity. When asked which area they hoped to pursue, ethical hacking and cloud computing quickly emerged as the most popular choices.

Then came an important perspective.
Our Managing Director reminded everyone that while certain specialisations attract the most attention, cybersecurity policy remains one of the most critical yet often overlooked areas. Protecting digital systems is not only about technology. It is also about governance, standards, compliance, and the policies that guide secure digital environments.

Our facilitator also challenged participants to think beyond the familiar. Cybersecurity offers diverse career opportunities, and every journey begins with a willingness to learn. Rather than rushing into expensive training programs, participants were encouraged to explore beginner-friendly resources and free learning opportunities to build a solid foundation before making financial commitments.

That is what ITHAC Community Learning Sessions are about: creating conversations that broaden perspectives, inspire informed decisions, and make learning accessible.

Everyone talks about cybersecurity until they try to enter the field, and then the questions begin.

Where do I start?
Do I need a technical background?
Which skills actually matter?
How do I gain experience?
How do I position myself for opportunities?

The truth is that many people are interested in cybersecurity, but fewer people understand how to approach the journey intentionally. This month at the ITHAC Community Learning Session, we are creating space for practical conversations around what it truly means to break into cybersecurity.

Beyond trends and buzzwords, this session is designed to help participants understand pathways, expectations, opportunities, and the mindset required to grow within the cybersecurity space.

At ITHAC, we do not organise Community Learning Sessions simply to fill a calendar. Every session is designed with one purpose: to ensure our community members leave with knowledge they can apply, perspectives that challenge their thinking, and practical insights that support their personal and professional growth.
