Around the globe right now, your family and friends are preparing for the holiday season, shopping online or visiting stores in the crazy Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. And even if you don't celebrate Christmas or one of the other religious celebrations, it's always a great time to pick up something you want for cheap.
So what do you want to pick up this holiday season? What have you already purchased? What are you hoping to receive from friends, family or Santa Claus under the Christmas tree?
Personally there's not a great deal I'm specifically eyeing off, although it'd be great to pick up some cheap hard drives for my home server, and perhaps a new laptop to replace my aging and quite slow piece of crap.
As for non-tech items (yes, sometimes I like to gift/receive things that aren't tech), I've been seriously considering buying Lego's The Tumbler or maybe The Tower of Orthanc as a display piece. Unfortunately these tend to be hard to find and usually out of stock at many retailers at this time of year.

Just a week after first unveiling the Alpha 7 II, Sony has announced that the mirrorless camera will be available for purchase in the US on December 9th. It will be priced at $1,699 as body-only and $1,999 with an FE 28-70mm, f/3.5-f/5.6 OSS zoom lens, which is the same price as its predecessor.
The Alpha 7 II offers several new features compared to the Alpha 7, including the latest 5-axis in-body stabilization system, something which can be used while capturing still photos as well as video footage. It also includes some design improvements to help reduce camera shake regardless of the lens that may be attached to the camera body.
In addition, the camera incorporates an enhanced autofocus system that combines 117 phase and 25 contact points to provide 30 per cent faster autofocus responsiveness, and also supports high bit rate XAVC-S recording.
The Alpha 7 II retains several features from the Alpha 7 as well, including a 24.3-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, the 3″ tilting LCD display on the back, offering a 3:2 aspect ratio capable of displaying 1.23 million dots, the ability to tilt the screen 107 degrees upwards and 41 degrees down, shutter speeds of up to 1/8000 second, an ISO sensitivity that can range between 100 to 25,600.

Large-screen smartphones were ridiculed during their first few years of existence, often reserved for true technology enthusiasts. If you wanted a mobile device with a large display, you bought a tablet... which is exactly what millions of people did.
The narrative around phablets has slowly changed as of late, however. Manufacturers are convincing people that it’s acceptable to look silly talking into a giant phone because they’re invaluable when it comes to web use and more importantly, media consumption.
And with Apple now in the phablet market, all bets are off.
Media consumption is key, however, because that’s what tablets are best at. With capable large-screen phones now in the hands of millions, many are spending less and less time with their once-beloved tablets.
Apple has all but abandoned the iPad mini. iPad sales in general are expected to turn in a yearly decline for the first time ever. And after seeing the latest data from Pocket, there’s really no way around it: phablets are cannibalizing tablet sales.

Google has added a new movie pre-order feature for Play Store users, allowing them to reserve upcoming movies, and watch them the first day they're available on digital. The feature is currently available to users residing in the United States, although the company says more countries will be added soon.
There are currently 15 movies available for pre-order, including Gone Girl, The Maze Runner, Lucy, Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and more. A complete list is available here.
A new pre-order button will show up next to unreleased movies. If you haven't done so yet, you'll need to enter credit card details to submit your pre-order, but your card will not be charged until the movie is delivered. Instead, you will receive an email receipt and the pre-order will be added to “My Movies”, along with relevant information and a release date.
Once the movie becomes available, you will receive another email confirming your purchase and the movie will be delivered to your library.
The new feature is designed to help you "forget film release countdowns" knowing that you'll get a heads up and the movie in your library as soon as it's out. Convenient, perhaps. But does it really make sense to pre-order digital items, something that can't go out of stock?

Microsoft’s research arm has garnered a lot of media attention this week thanks to demonstrations of its RoomAlive interactive gaming experience and a transparent smart cover for tablets. While both impressive in their own right, neither project is expected to show up as a consumer product anytime soon.
Microsoft's Xim, which launches today, is one of those rare research projects that actually end up in the hands of end-users.
Xim aims to reinvent how we share photos with friends and family. As you’ve no doubt experienced, most people simply huddle around a single phone to view pictures. Worse yet, someone hands you their phone and you end up scrolling too far in their camera roll and see something you wish you hadn’t.

Xim eliminates those concerns and the hassle of having to log into a social network or having a certain app installed to view shared photos. With Xim, a user can pull up to 50 photos from their camera roll, Dropbox, Facebook, Instagram or OneDrive that they wish to share then choose who to share with from their address book or by manually entering a phone number or e-mail address.
Once selected, the images are uploaded to a temporary cloud as a slideshow and a URL is sent to all recipients. Those on the receiving end can watch along as you navigate the slideshow without needing to install the app. If they do have the Xim app, however, they can participate by adding additional photos or even controlling the slideshow on their end. Xims are destructive in nature so they won't linger around in the cloud forever.
While it certainly seems like a novel idea, I’m not so sure how successful it’ll be. There’s already a wealth of apps and social networks for sharing photos and it seems unlikely that Xim will be able to replicate the experience that’s had when sharing photos with friends and family in person.
The Xim app is available for Android, iOS and Windows Phone free of charge starting today.

For Microsoft, Windows 10 is a very important step in realizing their next-generation vision for their operating systems. We've already heard how the Windows 10 core will be one and the same across Windows Phone, Windows RT and x86-based Windows (all of which will be branded as Windows 10), and the upcoming revamp of the Xbox OS.
Speaking at the Gartner Symposium ITxpo, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has reinforced the company's strategy for the next-generation of Windows, stating that "it can run on everything". Crucially, this includes Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which is shaping up to be a major platform in years to come.
Nadella believes that Windows 10 will be a fantastic operating system to run on IoT systems, as it's both manageable and secure. "It's the first step in a new generation of Windows as opposed to just another release after Windows 8."
Nadella didn't just talk about Microsoft's strategy for IoT; he hinted that we might see a revised licensing scheme for Windows 10. Microsoft has been looking at simplifying the way Windows is licensed, and will perhaps follow in the footsteps of Office 365, providing several options that focus on the user, not devices. This would allow customers to install Windows on a number of their devices with the one license, depending on the package purchased.
The cloud was also emphasized as part of Nadella's talk. Azure is an important part of Microsoft's services portfolio, and the company is planning to reveal more about the future of it on October 20th. However, despite the strengths of Azure, Nadella believes that the Office API is the most strategic in the company, which intertwines with their cloud services and has led to "billions of identity transactions in Azure Active Directory".
If Microsoft can execute well with all of these products, including Windows 10, 2015 could be the year we finally see their true 'one platform' vision in action.
