Over the years, the Nigeria government has been unable to secure its official websites, thus raising questions over claims by the government that it had mounted efforts to reduce the growing threat of violation of its digital presence.

Less than 24 hours we have receive several complains on massive hack into nigerian user yahoo email id, complain coming in from affected clients suggesting that Yahoo Mail users in nigeria have had their accounts hacked. While “hacked” is a very broad term nowadays, it does appear that Yahoo email accounts are being compromised after users click on a malicious link they receive in their inboxes.

In 3 high profile cases today we have seen how the attacker take full control of the mail boxes, redirecting all incoming mails to a clone account, to these effect we have advice every user to

Never open attachments (or follow links) from people you don't know.

Never open emails from people you don't know (delete the message).

Never type a username and password at a site that you have not explicitly typed its address. A hacker can mimic any site by looks and/or by url address.

If you ever get an email notifying you that you are a winner of the lottery, you are not!

If you ever get an email from a celebrity, government entity, bank, etc, and they are asking you to give them your info or follow a link, don't.

If a site that you are member of ( your bank, tax, etc) sends you an email asking for your password, it's not them.

Never never never submit personal information by email.

Do not install cracked/hacked/pirated software.

Nigerian Government websites on hackers' radar

The past three years has witness more cyber capabilitys in governmnt
raider , these has left us with an imaginary line. Cyber crime with more
website defacement has been on top of the game with high scale of
preference, crackers are subjected to new means of avenue to wealth by
giving a focus point at hacktivity, the highly populated opposition members
has given hope to the team by petronicing hackivist to place a bill board
of unwanted government policy on it's site.

Nigeria government are unable to secure its official websites raising a
question mark over claims by the government that it had mounted efforts to
reduce the growing threat of violation of its digital presence. According
to the latest data there has been an alarming increase in cyber violations
of official websites of governments agency / parastatal over the last
three years.

The digital appearance of Nigeria government has come under severe
pressure after 23 government websites were reported defaced in the year
2012. An analysis of data maintained by Centrex Ethical Lab Emergency
Response revealed that out of a total of 60 cyber defacements during the
year as many as 23 government (gov.ng) websites were violated. A maximum
of 15 cases of violation belonged to the .org

The government does not divulge details of websites violated. However, it
is in public domain that many of government's websites have come under the
cyber attack.

The data analysis showed that the defacement of government websites was
continually on the rise as the number of such cases grew from 1 % in 2009
to 10 % in 2010 and now 60 % in 2012 .While officials at government has
refused to speak on the subject, experts blamed lack of knowledge base as a
key reason for vulnerability of government websites.Cyber expert Nsikak
Nelson has pointed to the lack of understanding of ethical hacking among
government officials as the main reason for the growing attack.

Website defacement is a form of hacking. It is usually the substitution of
the original home page by a system cracker that breaks into a web server
and alters the hosted website creating one of his own.
