Security Greetings This Season
This is the season when a lot of people fall prey to many online scams. From stores offering bonanzas to merchants giving out free trials of products or services, the media is awash with one shopping news or the other. In all this we advice that you act cautiously to avoid becoming a victim of technology related attacks. Let the following guidelines be your compass this season.
TIPS
I. Be cautious of promo emails offering heaven and earth. Some of them contain malicious link intended to compromise your system if you take the bait
II. Do not click on links asking you to update your online profile and credentials at a website. Such websites even carry the look and feel of the real institutions. Be warned that these are ploys to steal your sensitive credentials.
III. Make it a habit to always uncheck "Remember my password" for every website you visit from a computer that is not personal to you. Even from office computers ensure you do not select "Remember my password". Anyone logging on to the same computer after you are off can ride on your saved password to enter into your account and wreck havoc on you.
IV. Avoid websites that offer free trial of product/service but requires that you provide your credit/debit card info. Such websites begin to charge you without your consent after the first month of trial whether or not you use the service or product.
V. Do not participate in distributing Christmass, new year & biryhday emails because they may become part of a chain email or hoax with malicious intent.
VI. Be careful the website you submit your email address details. The bad ones can use it to spam your mail box preventing you from getting/reading normal/official emails.
VII. Do not logon to your system with administrator privileges (i.e. local admin account). This will prevent any malware from using your privilege to execute and infect your system or destroy/steal your data.
VIII. Do not use the company resources such as email and otherwise to distribute hate, sexist or racist content. This can affect the productivity and morale of the affected parties and impact business.
XI. If you use you flash drive on computers outside the office, always check that your antivirus is running and up to date before you insert the flash drive into your office computer to ensure that any virus infection on the flash is prevented from getting into your office computer.
