8. RUN APPS SIDE-BY-SIDE (SPLIT SCREEN)

Multitask like a pro using two apps side-by-side.
One of the new features added in Android 7.0 Nougat is the option to run apps side-by-side or one above the other. This view comes in handy when you want to display photos, optimize your social networking, or multitask, although it’s a bit too laggy for gaming.

To set it up, tap the Overview button (the square icon below the screen to the left), and choose which of your recently used apps you want to see. Hold and drag it to the top or left of the display, then choose another open app to appear alongside or under it.

And since we’re already talking about the Overview button, here’s a pro tip: Double-tap rather than single-tap it to quickly switch between the two apps you’ve been using most recently.

7. ANDROID CASTING

For a number of years, you’ve been able to broadcast your Android phone or tablet’s display to the larger screen of a television using a Chromecast. In addition to beaming video from all the usual movie and TV apps, this streaming device can mirror your phone. Take advantage of a mirroring shortcut in the Quick Settings pane, which you access by dragging down from the top of the screen with two fingers. You should find a Cast option in this menu.

If it doesn’t show up, there’s another way to set up mirroring. First, check to make sure you’ve installed the Google Home app for Android. You probably already used this program to set up your Chromecast. Open the app, tap Cast screen/audio from its menu, and then choose your Chromecast. Your device’s display should appear on the big screen.

5. AN AIRPLANE MODE ISN'T JUST FOR AIRPLANES

Airplane mode has a number of fantastic benefits that go far beyond the runway. For example, if you’re having trouble with your 3/4G signal when you clearly shouldn’t, just switch airplane mode on and then off, and your signal should be restored.

Also, if you’ve been on-the-go all day and have 4% battery when you get back to the office, turn your phone on airplane mode and it will charge much faster.

Finally, if you’ve had a long day and send a text message to the wrong person, quickly turn on airplane mode and when the message fails to deliver, you can delete it and then actually send it to the correct person.

4. YOUR CAMERA ISN'T FOR SELFIES ALONE...

It seems so simple, but getting more mileage out of your phone’s camera can truly make your life easier. Snap a picture of your fridge/pantry before you head to the grocery store so that you know exactly what to buy. Suffer from parked-car memory failure? Take a picture of the closest intersection to your car’s location.

Use your smartphone camera to store highly useful information like your prescriptions (photos of your medicine bottles), your frequent flier number (photo of your frequent flier card), or your hotel’s address (photo/screen-grab of your travel itinerary) in case your lose service.

3. USE DO NOT DISTURB MODE

Another way to find your Zen — and work more effectively — is to block out all of your phone's usual distractions.

If you need an hour to work uninterrupted without phone calls, text messages, and other notifications taking your eyes away from your project, turn on Do Not Disturb mode. Many people use DND at bedtime, but never think of it during daylight hours.

On the iPhone, you can manually enable DND by pulling down the Control Panel from the top right of the screen and tapping the quarter moon icon. The process is similar on Android: Pull down from the top and find the "Do Not Disturb" quick-access button.

2. USE YOIR PHONE'S SEARCH FOR ANYTHING AND
EVERYTHING

You probably waste a lot of time trying to find things on your phone, from apps and contacts to calendar entries.

But the built-in search tool (pull down from the top of the Home screen) can find all sorts of things for you more quickly than you can. There's no need to find the calendar app, open it, and look for an upcoming appointment, for example, when you can go to it directly by searching for its name.

The same is true of contacts, email messages, text messages, apps, and web sites. If you have an iPhone, Spotlight Search is even more powerful than Android; it's even able to do simple math without opening the calculator.
