I've not read too many Copywriting books yet. But out of the few ones I've read, I love Breakthrough Advertising by Eugene Schwartz more.

What stood out to me is his concept of customer awareness levels, it is a foundational principle for crafting effective marketing messages.

Here’s an explanation of each level:

✅Completely Unaware:

Characteristics: Customers are not aware they have a problem or that there’s a solution.

Approach: Use storytelling to engage them emotionally, gradually making them aware of the problem and solution.

✅ Problem-Aware:

Characteristics: Customers know they have a problem but don’t know there’s a solution.

Approach: Identify their pain points clearly and introduce your product as the solution.

✅Solution-Aware:

Characteristics: Customers know the results they want but aren’t aware your product provides it.

Approach: Educate them on why your product is the best solution for their needs.

✅The Most Aware:

Characteristics: Customers know your product and only need to be convinced of the deal.

Approach: Focus on strong call-to-action and benefits. Highlight why they should buy now.

By understanding where your audience falls within these levels, you can create content that meet their needs and guide them effectively through the buying process.

Personalization in email marketing goes beyond just using someone's first name in the greeting as you're familiar with 😁

It's about understanding your audience and delivering content that resonates with them on a personal level.

It's about showing that you see them as individuals, not just email addresses on a list.

When you personalize your emails, it can lead to higher engagement, increased loyalty, and ultimately, more sales.

4th COMMANDMENT OF EMAIL MARKETING

THOU SHALL OBTAIN CONSENT.

Very Important.

One day, a senior colleague called me and said, “Bisi, do you have a Collection of Email addresses that I can buy?”

I paused for a while and I asked myself , is it true that some people actually buy Email addresses?

Listen, if you go through that route, your Email Marketing effort is already dead on arrival.

It is unwise and illegal to send marketing emails to those who did not give you permission to do so.

Why would you do that?

There is an ethical way of doing this thing so you can get results

And it's called PERMISSION MARKETING.

Permission Marketing is often used to describe the practice of obtaining explicit consent from individuals before sending them promotional emails.

HERE'S WHY OBTAINING CONSENT IS CRUCIAL IN EMAIL MARKETING:

1. Legal Compliance

In regions such as the European Union, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) mandates that businesses obtain explicit consent from individuals before sending them marketing emails.

Similar laws, like the CAN-SPAM Act in the United States and the CASL in Canada, also enforce strict rules about email consent.

Non-compliance can lead to hefty fines and damage to your business reputation.

I don't know if such a law exists in Nigeria but it's the right thing to do if you want to be taken seriously.

2. Building Trust and Credibility

When subscribers voluntarily opt-in to receive your emails, it signals that they trust you and are interested in what you have to offer.

This trust forms the foundation of a strong relationship that can lead to higher engagement rates, increased customer loyalty, and ultimately, better conversion rates.

3. Improving Engagement Rates

Subscribers who have willingly given their consent to receive your emails are more likely to engage with your content.

They are interested in your products, services, or information and are, therefore, more likely to open your emails, click on links, and take desired actions.

High engagement rates can improve your email deliverability, ensuring that your messages reach the intended recipients' inboxes rather than getting caught in spam filters.

4. Enhancing Email Deliverability

Email service providers (ESPs) and internet service providers (ISPs) use engagement metrics to determine the quality and relevance of your emails.

High open and click-through rates, coupled with low unsubscribe and spam complaint rates, signal to ESPs and ISPs that your emails are wanted and relevant.

This can enhance your email deliverability, ensuring that your messages reach your subscribers' inboxes rather than being filtered out as spam.

5. Respecting User Preferences

Obtaining consent respects your subscribers' preferences and autonomy.

It allows individuals to choose whether they want to receive Emails from you, which is a fundamental aspect of respecting their privacy.

By giving your subscribers control over their inbox, you demonstrate that you value their preferences and are committed to providing a positive user experience.

6. Reducing Unsubscribe and Spam Complaint Rates

When subscribers have not explicitly consented to receive your emails, they are more likely to find your messages intrusive and unwanted.

This can lead to higher unsubscribe rates and an increase in spam complaints, which can harm your sender reputation and email deliverability.

By obtaining consent, you ensure that your emails are only sent to those who genuinely want to hear from you, reducing the likelihood of negative reactions.

SO HOW CAN YOU OBTAIN THIS CONSENT?

It's simple. Create a LEAD MAGNET.

A Lead Magnet is any valuable resource you can give to your target audience for Free in exchange for their Email Addresses.

Your Lead Magnet must be so valuable that it can help your potential subscribers solve a major challenge almost immediately.

It should be short and straight to the point.

A Lead Magnet can be in the form of an Ebook, Worksheet, Checklist, Video, Masterclass or anything.

As long as it can help them solve a problem and it's short and concise.

TOOLS YOU CAN USE TO CREATE YOUR LEAD MAGNET

CANVA: you can use Canva to create an ebook, workbook, Cheat Sheet or anything that has to do with writing. Download it in PDF Format.

CAMTASIA OR ZOOM: You can use any of these tools to record a short video guiding them on how to solve a particular problem fast.

When you are done creating your Lead Magnet, save it on Google drive and insert the link on your opt-in Page.

So for your potential subscribers to get the lead magnet, they should give you their email address.

And they will gladly do that because they need that problem to be solved.

And they will also be looking forward to more valuable content from you.

So yes, they would grant you that permission if they are truly your Target Audience.

Both are passionate business owners eager to start email marketing.

Salewa is a brilliant baker, and Ebuka owns a trendy tech startup.
