WINDHOEK-Namibia will be joining the rest of the world in honour and celebration of Down Syndrome.
According to the Chairperson of the Down Syndrome Association of Namibia(DSAN), Eline van der Linden, the month of October is recognized as the month in which communities raise awareness about the genetic disorder.
She said that a picnic will be held on 21 October at the Eros primary school from 11h00-16h00 at the school’s sports field. Van der Linden said that the association advocates for the inclusion of people with DS in schools and work places.
“We invite family members, caretakers and friends of people with DS for the celebrations. Bring your blankets and picnic baskets or buy food and drinks at the venue. We will provide a lunch pack for kids with DS and their siblings. There will be music and fun activities,” Van der Linden stated.
Statistics report that last year alone, 100 babies were born with DS. In Southern Africa, one in 700 babies is born with the disorder.
The DSAN is a non-profit organization run by parents with DS children. It was incorporated in 2012 and membership is free and open to anyone.
