To find your identity, first take off the mask.

We often think of identity as something we create — something we put on for the world to see.

But real identity starts with stripping all of that away.

What do you stand for?
What matters to you?
What makes you different?
What do you want people to remember?

The same is true for a brand.

You don't start with the logo. You start by looking within.

Because a strong brand identity isn't a mask you put on your business.

It's a reflection of what's already there.

Today is World Elephant Day. 🐘

And somehow, Oliphant Designs arrived home just in time.

There is something extraordinary about the way elephants move through this world.

Their families are led by a matriarch ~ often the oldest and most experienced female. She leads not simply through strength, but through memory, wisdom and experience. She remembers the roads travelled before, where water can be found and when danger is near.

Around her, mothers, sisters, aunts and daughters help raise and protect the next generation. Knowledge is carried forward. No one walks entirely alone.

And despite their immense size and strength, elephants move with remarkable sensitivity. They communicate across great distances and can even sense vibrations travelling through the earth beneath their feet.

Powerful enough to change a landscape.
Gentle enough to listen to the ground.

That is why the elephant feels so at home here.

A reminder that strength doesn't always have to be loud. That leadership can nurture. That memory gives us roots. And that the way we move through the world matters just as much as where we're going.

Happy World Elephant Day.

May we protect these extraordinary giants ~ and also learn something from them too.

So... why Oliphant? 🐘

A few people have asked where the new name comes from.

The simple answer is that Oliphant is my mother's maiden surname — but, as I've discovered, the name carries a story of its own.

From its roots in Europe and Scotland to its journey south to Africa, I found layers of meaning in the name that felt strangely aligned with everything I wanted this new chapter to represent: strength, memory, peace, provision and purpose.

Sometimes a name is more than a name.

Sometimes you discover that the meaning was there long before you went looking for it.

Well... we're officially here. 🐘

After all the remembering, discovering, becoming and coming home, today feels like the first real working day of Oliphant Designs.

New name. New identity. A whole new visual world to play with ~ but the same purpose that's always been at the heart of what I do: creating work that doesn't just look beautiful, but means something.

So, enough about the launch. 😄

Time to create.

Happy Monday!

Some stories are designed. Others are discovered.

Twenty years of creating led me back to where it all began.

Welcome home.

OLIPHANT DESIGNS — WHERE MEANING MEETS DESIGN
A brand is more than what we see.

It is what it believes.
What it stands for.
How it behaves when nobody is watching.
The purpose behind what it creates and the intention behind what it gives to the world.

Because, much like people, the most beautiful brands are built from the inside out.

Purpose gives us direction. Direction inspires passion. Passion gives life to creation. And when what we create serves something beyond ourselves, it begins to carry meaning.

That belief sits at the heart of Oliphant Designs.

The elephant became our symbol not simply because of a name, but because of what it represents: strength without aggression, wisdom, memory, connection and care. In the herd, strength is used to protect. Knowledge is passed between generations. The young are nurtured. The whole moves together.

It reminds us that what we build should never exist only for ourselves.

We believe businesses should be profitable. They need to be in order to grow, employ, create and contribute. But we also believe that success carries responsibility—to our clients, our communities, our environment and the world our work helps shape.

And perhaps that is why this doesn't feel like a rebrand.

It feels like a homecoming.

After twenty years in design, Oliphant Designs represents a return to what I have always believed good design should do: look beyond the surface, discover what is true, and give that truth a form people can see, feel and remember.

We build brands.
We tell stories.
We create experiences.

But first, we look for meaning.

REMEMBERING

Funny how life only starts making sense when you turn around and look at the road you've already walked.

As I get ready to celebrate twenty years as a designer, I've found myself looking back. And the more I look, the more I realise something.

The clues were there from the beginning.

A simple mark that reminded me of my connection to the Creator and creation. A light that quietly kept showing up. An eye that became part of my identity long before I understood why. Even a family name that had always belonged to me, patiently waiting until I was ready to carry it again.

And then there was the elephant.

Long before my first business. Before my first logo. Before I ever called myself a designer. I wrote a little children's story called Trading Shoes. It followed a boy and an elephant as they learned to see the world through each other's eyes.

At the time, it was just a story.

I never imagined that same elephant would keep appearing throughout the next twenty years.

My first business became Gaia Namaste. That's where the elephant and my symbol first came together.

Over time, the elephant slowly disappeared, while the eye remained.

Or at least that's what I thought.

Looking back now, I don't think it ever left.

The same is true of the places that shaped me. Namibia's mountains. Its deserts. Camel thorn trees. The ocean. The wildlife. They weren't simply places I photographed. They became part of how I see the world. Part of how I think. Part of how I create.

When I connect the dots today, I don't see random moments anymore.

I see a story that has been unfolding quietly for years. One chapter at a time.

Maybe some symbols choose us long before we understand their meaning.

And maybe home isn't somewhere you discover.

Maybe it's something you remember.

Tomorrow, the journey comes home.

I didn't know exactly where this road would lead.
I only knew I couldn't stay where I was.

Sometimes the first step isn't about certainty.
It's about becoming.

Homecoming.
