A short while back, I was given the opportunity to do 5-axis work for my good friends ! The component pictured, is one of several pieces these guys machine in house for a side winder kit.

The project entailed a model revision to spruce up and add some pizazz to the cylinder head mount, which anchors the entire assembly to the engine. This 6.5” tall part offered some unique challenges in how I approached programming it, as typically I don’t often encounter parts this tall!

I modeled this part in Solidworks, programmed it in HSMWorks, and machined it in their in house UMC-750SSP. Overall cycle time is sub 1 hour, which is on par for what I had hoped given the 3 operations required to finish this part.

I love handling a process from start to finish, no matter what I’m making - but high performance parts make it that much sweeter! I’m thankful to have good friends who think highly enough of my work, to allow me to come in and take a proven setup, and improve upon it.
