Zhen Yik is a Malaysian illustrator and graphic designer, as well as the founder of JL95 Studio. From posting funny reels to publishing his own books, how did he make art into a career?
Zhen Yik had a background in design, and worked several years both in the industry and as a freelancer. Eventually, he decided he wanted to create his own content. To do so, he started on social media. ๐ฑ
It wasn't overnight, with Zhen Yik spending 2-3 years building his own IP, as well as establishing what his visual identity would be. Now, his work blends child-like, fantastical and relatable elements. ๐จ๏ธ
Working independently brought its own struggles, which sometimes cost him time and money. In that time, it has been the encouragement of his fans that kept him going. For example, he recalls a time two fans came rushing to his booth through rain to buy his merchandise! โ๏ธโ
Zhen Yik's content has grown and changed overtime, starting with humorous content before branching into ghost stories or his life experiences. He even sometimes gets ideas from his fans to make into content! This give-and-take helps his community to thrive. ๐ฅ
Overall, his journey shows the importance of adaptability. He's a creator who has always been receptive to feedback, and changing his approach while never staying in his comfort zone!
