Selangor has declared 1 September 2026 a special state holiday to celebrate Team Selangor’s overall championship win at Sukma 2026.
For HR professionals, one question that may come up is: Does this automatically mean a paid holiday for private sector employees.
While the announcement applies to government offices and schools in Selangor, private sector employers should consider the relevant provisions under Section 9 of the Holidays Act 1951 and Section 60D of the Employment Act 1955, together with their employment contracts and company policies.
Depending on the applicable arrangements, employers may choose to:
1️⃣ Grant the day as a paid day off
2️⃣ Treat it as optional or unpaid leave
3️⃣ Continue with business as usual
