TML INSIGHTS - Insights from the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) June 4–8 in San Jose, California by Dan Isacson, The Mobile Life. The annual conference held by Apple to showcase its new software and technologies.

# # # AR is just getting better
Apple seem to be doing a lot of work with AR. ARKit was just announced last year and today the next version ARKit2 was revealed. This is a major upgrade and enables many new cool features in realm of AR. What impressed me the most was the possibility to share AR worlds, meaning you can play with or against other people in the same augmented world. The bottom floor at the event has 3 dedicated tables where people can try the open-sourced AR demo game Swift Shot.

# # # Be in control
Apple, like Google, put a lot of emphasize on letting people be in control over how much they use their devices. With iOS12 it becomes easy to monitor and see how much you use your phone and the different apps. You will be able to put time restrictions on how long you are allowed to use certain apps for. This is perfect for families with kids where you might want to restrict certain content.

Stay tuned for more insights throughout the week

TML PEOPLE – Kylie Teh Shau Hooi, Technical Manager

ā€œI was a bit of an odd bird when I started, both by developing in iOS but also being a woman in techā€

Kylie is our technical manager working across all our airline clients and with all aspects of our airline platform. As a graduated engineer Kylie did not have a clear path to programming, but in the end her interest in Apple lead her into iOS development, being one of the first women at her university to develop for iOS. Kylie joined TML 2014 and celebrated four years with the company on May 2nd. She is based in our Tech House in Kuala Lumpur.

How did you end up in tech?

I attended a Bachelor of Electronics Engineering at Multimedia University, MMU in Kuala Lumpur. A program with around 500 students and approximately 50 girls. Our focus was electronics engineering and hardware, but as an Apple fan I reached out to Machines Apple Reseller and asked for an internship. I was accepted and started as a support technician. However, I really wanted to create an app for Apple and pitched an app solution for store locations as my final project. It was accepted and I created an app which is still available today. This was my first app.

Why were you so interested in programming and iOS development?

It was rather a new area at this time and there were not many resources or tutorials to learn from. In Malaysia most people use Android since it is cheaper so Apple was a bit unknown. I was just very fond of Apple so I had to teach myself. I really like Apple“s user experience and their developing tools are friendlier to developers than Androids.

What do you enjoy with being a developer?

I really like to create a product. Something that is out there and can be used by people. Working with airlines we are talking about a lot of users. Our business critical applications manages close to half a billion dollar per year. I am also able to use my skills for good like when I was able to help the Pink Ribbon Wellness Foundation in Malaysia by creating an iOS application to create breast cancer awareness and self-checking.

What is it like to work at TML and with a multicultural workforce?

I really like the work / life balance at TML and the flexibility to be able to work when I am the most productive. I also enjoy learning more about new cultures. On our last kick-off we went to ƅre in northern Sweden and I got to see snow for the first time.

What is important for apps in the airline industry?

User experience, booking flow and simple UI. Our apps are built to make the experience as smooth as possible for the users with no log-in, automated user profiles and digital boarding passes.

TML PEOPLE – Magali Cebe, UX - UI designer.

We would like to celebrate our women in tech. Magali is our UX-UI designer working with projects for our digital platform The Mobile Airlineā„¢. She started her career in Paris, moved to Malta for 2 years and joined The Mobile Life in Singapore, April 2017.

ā€œWhen I decided to be a designer I chose my passion - designing has never been a ā€œjobā€ for meā€

What’s it like to move from Malta to Singapore?
Moving 10000 km away is always an adventure! Even more when you are alone. I wanted new challenges and some exotic vibes. I really got what I was looking for. Singapore brings me serenity, the endless heat and its melting pot of cultures inspires me.

Most exciting projects?
Every project is different and exciting. But I have to admit that I love working on iLab*. One week design sprints session to re-invent the products of today for tomorrow. No technical restrictions, no limits. I love this collaborative process and what the teamwork leads us to...

*iLab is an initiative launched by The Mobile Life to explore cutting edge technology solutions internally and with partners.

Share your most exciting design trend?
2018 means the return of brutalism and moody tones, background gradients, retro modern bright illustrations (I love it!), split pages web design and more … cinemagraphs! Between photography and video, they are living images that contain one mobile looped element which create a never ending movement. It gives a poetic soul to a static image…

What does a normal day in the office look like for you?
A classic day starts with a vitamin cocktail and a loooong black coffee (there will be a few during the day...) Then I feed my brain with articles, trends, news… in design, tech and innovations to keep me updated. Same ritual, different places... My office is everywhere I can find a good wi-fi (and coffee...). The whole world keeps me inspired. TML offers me this freedom.
