Clearaudio’s Tracer tonearm… watch-like precision
A NEW tonearm is a rare event… and yes, we have this rare event, thanks to renown German turntable specialist Clearaudio – the company has just released a new model called the Tracer, a radial tracking unit. This is the 10th Clearaudio tonearm in its current catalogue, and takes its place between the Magnify and Clarify models, just three steps below the flagship Universal.
We’re told the Tracer is a “minimalist design that places particular emphasis on the stable positioning of the phono cartridge above the record’s surface.”

The press release adds: “Clearaudio’s design team drew on a number of engineering tricks typically associated with high-end watchmaking. Its design features a high-precision, low-friction jewelled bearing which is deftly crafted using a combination of tungsten and sapphire. The tonearm tube is carbon, hence is both extremely rigid and very lightweight, giving a just-right combination of stability and agility.”

A tribute to one of the great Renaissance men, the daVinci MC v2 moving coil was the result of our developmental work on our version 2 series as we explored modern material science. Super neodymium was one special material we used in the generator, creating a ring of 8 magnets with dual 24-karat pure gold air-core coils inside.

For the daVinci body, an aluminum-magnesium alloy with ceramic surface layer was chosen for its lightness, rigidity, and self-damping characteristics. Realizing our twelve-finger design, each finger with a different radius, with this advanced material, provides enhanced low level resolution via its resonance control. The generator of the daVinci MC v2 is mechanically, magnetically and electrically symmetrical, and it uses our Micro-HD Diamond with solid boron rod cantilever.

The daVinci MC v2 moving coil’s forward thinking and musical qualities personify Leonardo Da Vinci as it represents an ideal balance in science, invention, art, and humanity.

It shares the same Panzerholz body material as the $6,000 Jubilee MC cartridge, both introduced to celebrate Clearaudio’s 40th Anniversary.

These are the only 2 Clearaudio cartridges that use Panzerholz or “bullet-proof wood”, a high-tech laminate constructed of multiple layers of baltic birch wood compressed with advanced adhesives under 60 tons of pressure. This special body material, used in Clearaudio’s best turntables, lowers the noise floor for better dynamic contrasts, low end definition, and rich tonality.

The Jubillee MM, as with all Clearaudio moving magnet cartridges, uses a grading system for optimizing parts quality and matching. This provides superior trackability as well as better channel separation and balance for enhanced imaging. Its high output and 47k Ω loading makes it ideal for all phono stages.

CLEARAUDIO CONCEPT WOOD TURNTABLE

The Concept turntable sets a new standard in turntable manufacturing. Precision German engineering combined with the latest technology and timeless design signal a new era in analog playback. The Concept is equipped with the innovative Concept tonearm (formerly known as the Verify tonearm; no change other than name), which features a friction-free magnetic bearing technology. A high-quality Clearaudio moving magnet (Concept MM) or moving coil (Concept MC) cartridge can be pre-mounted and factory-adjusted to complete this setup. The Concept is belt-driven by a low-noise, decoupled DC motor built into the resonant-optimized plinth, “… resulting in an attractive, small-footprint design that doesn’t require the buyer to find a place for an outboard motor—or even a motor placed in a hole in the plinth!” (Michael Fremer, Stereophile, June 2011). The platter is made of 30mm-thick polyoxymethylene (POM), an engineering thermoplastic used in precision parts that require high stiffness, low friction, and excellent dimensional stability. The Concept plays at three speeds – 33rpm, 45rpm, and 78rpm – selectable by Electronic Speed Control k**b.
