💡 How does SAP Business One calculate your item cost?
Understanding how the system values inventory isn’t just a technical setup. It directly affects profit accuracy, cost variance, and financial reporting.
SAP Business One supports 4 main costing methods, each serving different business needs 👇

🔹 1️⃣ Moving Average Cost (MAC)
Recalculates after every Goods Receipt or Issue.
(Current Stock Value + Incoming Value) ÷ (Current Quantity + Incoming Quantity)
Example:
-Current stock: 100 units @ RM10
-New GRPO: 50 units @ RM12
-New MAC = (100×10 + 50×12) ÷ (100+50) = RM10.67
✅ Best for: Trading & Distribution
⚠️ Risk: Negative stock distorts the calculation.

🔹 2️⃣ FIFO (First In, First Out)
Issues the oldest stock first. Ideal for expiry-sensitive goods.
Example:
-Receive 100 units @ RM10
-Receive 50 units @ RM12
-Issue 120 units → (100×10 + 20×12) = RM1,240 total cost
✅ Best for: Food and Beverage
⚠️ Risk: Frequent backdating causes cost mismatches.

🔹 3️⃣ Standard Cost
Uses a fixed, pre-defined cost in Item Master. Variance posted automatically.
Example:
-Standard cost = RM10
-Actual receipt = RM11 → variance RM1 posted automatically
✅ Best for: Manufacturing with planned costing
⚠️ Risk: Remember to update the standard cost periodically.

🔹 4️⃣ Batch / Serial Valuation Method
Each batch or serial number carries its own individual cost.
Perfect for industries where traceability and lot costing are critical (e.g., pharma, electronics).
Example:
-Batch A001 → 100 units @ RM10
-Batch A002 → 100 units @ RM12
-When issuing Batch A002 → cost = RM12 (specific to that batch)
✅ Best for: High-value or regulated goods
⚠️ Risk: Manual handling errors lead to valuation differences.
