Audiolab Omni / Audiolab 6000A MKll / Quad S2:80th Anniversary
The Quad S2 are spectacular and absolutely amazing sounding, it represents a totally new level of performance for this price point.
STEREOPHILE's Ken Mecelf loved them, so I was intrigued to find out more.
In our showroom, we also sell Dali, KEF, Bowers Wilkins , Wharfedale, so this little Quad we're going to have some fierce competition.
With further breaking in the Quad, we found it was a revelation. The ribbon tweeter offers fantastic detail yet is smooth. The bass is deep and tight and the image is huge, couple that will a great finish, reasonable size and that are easy to drive. In our sound room, I was seeking a more conventional looking loudspeaker then the much loved KEF LS50.
Truly say, the Quad S2 is so remarkable for it's price you get a compact well finished monitor with one of the world's best true ribbon tweeter, which is damped with a thin layer of mylar, so in essence this is a damped tweeter.
With Audiolab Omni, a full completion all-in-one integrated amplifier ( no need any source added) , the Quad S2 produced fantastic sense of balance with great detail and musicality, the soundstage is huge and the amount of deep bass for such a compact speaker is really surprising.
Audiolab 6000A MKll and Quad S2 80th Anniversary, good match ??
The S2 are superb, and the 6000A ll does them justice, the sound is crisp and clear without being analytical, and the sound stage outstanding, almost holographic. It's a very involving combination and I can listen for hours on end. The bass of this combo is again, extremely good, being tight and fast - I have no need of a subwoofer, and plays tunes that never smear the midrange and treble. You can have a bass guitar strutting it's stuff and still make out clearly the delicate taps and cymbals or a triangle.
S2 at 88dB, need an amp with 50 Watts per channel ( at least) , the volume control scales very well across the range (does not start to distort from half way) , and even since I attached our in house Atelier Rullit Field Coil (4N) speaker cable, I found that it increases the volume by around 3dB at any given setting ( under JIS 1KHz & DIN 400Hz as ref freq)
