Apple Self Service Repair Program

apple finally launched the self service repair program in the US. here are cost breakdown when opting for a lcd self repair program of an iphone 12

1. original lcd - rm1170
2. repair kit rental fees - rm218
3. deposit for repair kit (you'll get ur money back once u return the kit) - rm4360

summing it up, you'll spend a WHOPPING rm5748 for upfront costs!

the repair kit consist of 2 LARGE BOXES which contains

1. a HUGE hot plate (for removing the lcd)
2. and also a HUGE press tool (for attaching the lcd to the phone i guess)
3. and also a HUGE rolling tool (for sticking the battery to the phone which is not needed for this scenario)
4. screwdriver kit
5. adhesive kit

dah mcm nak overhaul kete pulak.

if i were to replace the lcd myself, here are tools that i used to replace the lcd
1. screwdriver
2. guitar pick
3. glue

yes, thats all is needed. there is no need for gigantic tools for this work. they always make things complicated BECAUSE they are APPLE. i cant deny that i still need to perform chip transplant to remove the display warning message but still, it is WAY CHEAPER than opting for the self repair program. furthermore, it is also cheaper to send the iphone to apple service center which costs rm1220 (compared to rm1340, assuming the repair kit has been returned).

i am still trying to convince myself whether this repair kit is worth spending for. bearing these costs for the sake of preventing the iphone's "non genuine display message" (in the event of changing the lcd without doing the chip transplant). i let the consumer to decide, but honestly, for malaysians, in this economic uncertainty, apart from T20, i think the people would think twice before opting for this self servics repair program.
