From overloaded BNG to carrier-grade latency optimization.
In collaboration with Origin WiFi, we successfully completed a major network infrastructure upgrade focused on real-world user experience, latency consistency, and scalability.
The previous PPPoE BNG platform based on MikroTik CCR2004 began reaching high CPU utilization during peak hours, causing increased latency and customer gaming complaints under heavy load.
After infrastructure analysis and live traffic evaluation, we redesigned the access architecture and migrated the PPPoE x86 BNG core powered by Dual Xeon PowerEdge.
Upgrade highlights:
• ~500 active PPPoE subscribers
• Peak traffic reaching 3.5 Gbps
• CPU usage reduced from ~90% to around 10%
• fq-codel AQM deployed on BNG side
• Significantly improved latency stability under load
• Reduced bufferbloat for gaming, streaming, and VoIP
• Local AdGuard DNS infrastructure deployment
• Nginx reverse proxy/CDN optimization for improved routing performance
Bufferbloat testing now consistently achieves A+ ratings with near-zero latency increase during active traffic load.
By applying fq-codel directly on the PPPoE BNG, latency is controlled at the network edge itself, greatly reducing bufferbloat regardless of customer router quality.
This project was not focused purely on bandwidth numbers, but on delivering a smoother and more responsive network experience for end users.
Modern ISP infrastructure is no longer only about speed:
latency, routing quality, DNS responsiveness, and queue engineering matter just as much.
