Massive Blackout and Communications Outage in Mexico 🇲🇽
In Mexico — on Friday, September 26, 2025 — power was knocked out to more than 2.2 million users across the states of Yucatán, Campeche, and Quintana Roo after a problem with a transmission line during maintenance. President Claudia Sheinbaum said technicians from the state power company (CFE) worked to restore service, and electricity later returned to most of Mérida, much of Campeche, and towns in Quintana Roo such as Chetumal, Bacalar, and Holbox.
The outage lasted for several hours and also caused major disruptions to mobile phone and internet networks, leaving many areas without communication.
In Spain — earlier this year — a massive blackout struck on April 28, 2025, affecting much of Spain 🇪🇸 and Portugal 🇵🇹. It disrupted daily life as telephony, internet services, public transportation, traffic lights, and even emergency services were affected.
Later, on May 20, 2025, Spain 🇪🇸 also suffered a major telecommunications outage when a network update by Telefónica knocked out fixed phones, internet, and even emergency number 112 across several regions.
